Football Recruiting
The Opening: Day One in the Books, Buckeyes are Fast
By Tony Gerdeman

The Opening kicked off with all-day SPARQ testing, which then led to the SPARQ National Championship, which was won by Louisiana's Speedy Noil. Noil's score of 153.90 was the second-highest of all-time, behind last year's 154.47 by OSU linebacker Mike Mitchell.

Ohio State receiver commit Terry McLaurin (5-11 181) finished second in the competition after running a 4.40 40-yard dash, clocking a 4.07 short shuttle, throwing the power ball 42' and jumping out of the stadium with a 44.8" vertical.

The performance will likely move McLaurin up the ranking charts, as his days as an under-the-radar three-star recruit are probably over. That is, unless, he shows a lack of hands over these next couple of days.

Notable

* Kyle Trout's shuttle time of 4.42 was better than top tight ends Ian Bunting (4.44) and Jeb Blazevich (4.43), as well as quarterbacks Stephen Collier (4.43) and Jerod Heard (4.49). It was also better than Illinois linebackers Nyles Morgan (4.46) and Clifton Garrett (4.79).

* Parris Campbell was invited to run in the Fastest Man Competition, which pitted the men with the three fastest 40 times who weren't participating in the SPARQ National Championship. He got a slow start and looked like he finished third to 2015 receiver George Campbell and Curtis Samuel.

* Damon Webb's numbers were disappointing considering the type of player that he is. However, considering the type of player that he is, his numbers are meaningless. Looks like it was a bad day at the office, nothing more. Similar to what happened with Jalin Marshall last year.

* Dante Booker had the third-best 40-yard dash among the linebackers. His 4.53 was only bested by Dillon Bates (4.51) and Rashaan Evans (4.51).

* Raekwon McMillan's shuttle time of 4.15 was shockingly impressive. Especially when you consider Parris Campbell ran a 4.16 at 59 fewer pounds.

* The Buckeyes are looking at Austin Roberts as a flex tight end, and while he may be a little undersized at 6-2 211, he should make up for it with his 4.51 40-yard dash.

* Curtis Samuel threw up some very nice numbers as well. If the Buckeyes could land him, that would give them at least three guys running in the low 4.4s with verticals of 40-plus inches. Tack that on to the offensive weaponry brought in last year, and you have to like the potential
