Plenty of Buckeye Targets on Initial 'Scout 300' List
By Tony Gerdeman
Scout recently unveiled their initial 'Scout 300' list, ranking their top 300 prospects in the 2014 class. As you would expect, Urban Meyer and his staff are in contact with a good portion of them.
Currently, three of the Buckeyes' four commits are on the list, with Damon Webb (35), Parris Campbell (40) and Kyle Trout (122) all bearing mention. Marcelys Jones is not listed, however, and is currently ranked 33rd in the state of Ohio alone.
This far from 2014's signing day, a very wide net has been cast for players. The coaches are searching all over the nation for future Buckeyes. You can see that in number of prospects they are talking to at the moment.
Things will eventually begin to become more concentrated over the next six months, before they then stretch out again next January as the coaches look for another James Clark type of player to get in on late.
Until then, here are some of the prospects on the initial 'Scout 300' that the Buckeyes are talking to.
#2 Da'Shawn Hand (6-5 260) #1 DE (Woodbridge VA)
Would be a shock if he ended up in Columbus.
#4 Lorenzo Carter (6-6 235) #2 DE (Norcross GA)
Rivals' southeast recruiting analyst Woody Wommack states that the Buckeyes could be the team to beat here.
#5 Tony Brown (6-1 185) #1 CB (Beaumont TX)
Brown has committed to an official visit to Ohio State, and Urban Meyer, Tom Herman and Kerry Coombs will keep working him in the meantime.
#6 Braden Smith (6-6 278) #2 OT (Olathe KS)
Smith will be visiting Ohio State, Michigan and Notre Dame in the next couple of weeks.
#8 Juju Smith (6-1 185) #1 S (Long Beach CA)
Smith had the Buckeyes in his top five even before he received his OSU offer.
#11 Jabrill Peppers (6-0 190) #4 CB (Paramus NJ)
Peppers had a top two of Stanford and Ohio State, but that has now grown to a top five with Michigan, Notre Dame and Alabama.
#16 K.C. McDermott (6-6 280) #3 OT (Wellington FL)
McDermott is likely a long shot for the Buckeyes.
#21 Andrew Brown (6-4 295) #3 DE (Chesapeake VA)
Brown has the Buckeyes in his top 10 and wants to visit Columbus at some point.
#24 Drake Harris (6-3 175) #3 WR (Grand Rapids MI)
Harris, who has reopened his recruitment, is a Michigan State commit who is one of the many lanky receivers that Ohio State has offered.
#28 Trevion Thompson (6-3 180) #4 WR (Durham NC)
Thompson once had a top three of Ohio State, Clemson and Florida, but he has since scrapped that list and considers himself completely open.
#29 Laurence Jones (6-2 210) #4 S (Monroe LA)
Jones is a top prospect from the state of Louisiana, so history would tell Buckeye fans not to get their hopes up.
#30 Clifton Garrett (6-2 227) #2 MLB (Plainfield IL)
Garrett and the Buckeyes like each other a lot, and Ohio State could be considered a favorite, but February is a long way off.
#31 Damian Prince (6-6 305) #5 OT (Forestville MD)
Prince is one of the top tackle prospects in the 2014 class and is planning on taking an official visit to Ohio State.
#32 Malik McDowell (6-6 300) #6 DE (Detroit MI)
McDowell isn't likely to be a Buckeye, but he's too big and too local not to go after.
#33 Marshon Lattimore (6-0 175) #5 WR (Cleveland OH)
Being a Glenville Tarblooder, if Lattimore doesn't end up at Ohio State, there will be some disappointed Buckeye fans, and some surprised recruiting analysts.
#34 Joe Mixon (6-0 195) #5 RB (Oakley CA)
Mixon has collected offers the last month like a hoarder, which means that it will take him a while to sift through them all.
#35 Damon Webb (6-0 175) #6 CB (Detroit MI)
Webb committed to Ohio State back in January, and currently doesn't appear to be interested in changing his status.
#40 Parris Campbell (6-1 180) #6 RB (Akron OH)
Campbell, an Ohio State commit, has almost come out of nowhere on Scout's recruiting board to end up as their #6 RB and 40th prospect overall in the initial Scout 300.
#41 Jalen Hurd (6-3 200) #7 RB (Hendersonville TN)
The Buckeyes should be in it for the long haul with Hurd, who consistently has Ohio State among his leaders.
#47 Kyle Berger (6-2 215) #2 OLB (Cleveland OH)
Berger, who is going to be involved in a battle between Ohio State and Michigan, is the #2 OLB in the nation according to Scout.
#48 Jalen Brown (6-2 170) #8 WR (Phoenix AZ)
Brown is wide open right now, which probably isn't a good sign for the Buckeyes.
#51 Jamarco Jones (6-5 285) #6 OT (Chicago IL)
#52 Ermon Lane (6-2 193) #9 WR (Homestead FL)
Jones has offers from all over the nation, and the Buckeyes are certainly in the mix.
Lane recently received an Ohio State offer, but to have any chance they'll need to get him on campus.
#53 Caleb Henderson (6-3 220) #2 QB (Burke VA)
Henderson, who is Scout's #2 QB, has serious interest in the Buckeyes, but does not yet have an offer.
#55 Raekwon McMillan (6-2 230) #5 MLB (Hinesville GA)
Many expect McMillan to end up a Buckeye next February, but they are still going to have to fend off the rest of the nation in order to land him.
#61 Sam Mustipher (6-3 286) #2 OG (Olney MD)
Mustipher is one of the top interior line prospects in the nation and has the offers to prove it.
#62 Mark Andrews (6-6 220) #11 WR (Scottsdale AZ)
Andrews, who is the #11 WR in the nation per Scout, has a visit to Ohio State scheduled in April.
#63 Elijah Hood (6-1 215) #10 RB (Charlotte NC)
Hood has a current top three of Notre Dame, Michigan and Ohio State, in that order.
#75 Drew Barker (6-4 205) #4 QB (Hebron KY)
Barker, who is very high on the Buckeyes, may be #2 on Ohio State's quarterback board, but he still doesn't have an offer.
#82 Derrell Scott (5-11 185) #12 RB (Havelock NC)
Recently, Scott has had the Buckeyes in his top two or three, with South Carolina being his leader.
#84 Tyler Luatua (6-3 215) #2 TE (La Mirada CA)
Luatua is one of the nation's top tight ends, and he happens to have Ohio State in his top five.
#85 Quenton Nelson (6-5 293) #8 OT (Red Bank NJ)
Nelson, who is Scout's #8 OT, has a visit to Ohio State scheduled at the end of March.
#91 Lawrence Marshall (6-3 215) #14 DE (Southfield MI)
Formerly committed to Ohio State, but has since decided to look around at other schools, as well as keep his eye on the Buckeyes.
#95 Deshaun Watson (6-3 176) #7 QB (Gainesville GA)
Watson is a Clemson commit and he remains the only quarterback that Ohio State has offered.
#96 Daniel Cage (6-3 270) #4 DT (Cincinnati OH)
Cage is Scout's #4 DT in the nation, but he does not currently have an Ohio State offer.
#101 Jalyn Holmes (6-5 230) #16 DE (Norfolk VA)
Holmes, who also plays tight end, plans to visit Ohio State in the spring, as well as take an official visit per Land Grant Holy Land.
#104 Demarre Kitt (6-1 193) #16 WR (Tyrone GA)
Kitt has had a top two of Clemson and Ohio State for a while now, and nobody else can seem to worm their way in.
#122 Kyle Trout (6-6 280) #12 OT (Lancaster OH)
Ranked the #12 OT in the nation, Trout committed to Ohio State in February.
#128 Dante Booker (6-3 217) #8 OLB (Akron OH)
Ohio State leads for Booker, and if he doesn't end up in Columbus it would be considered an upset.
#131 Dallis Todd (6-5 210) #22 WR (La Mirada CA)
Todd, who plans on visiting Ohio State in April, is another of the big-bodied receivers that the Buckeyes are looking for.
#139 Montae Nicholson (6-3 200) #12 S (Monroeville PA)
Nicholson, Rivals' #47 prospect overall, has already visited Ohio State and plans to do so again.
#141 Erick Smith (6-1 190) #13 S (Cleveland OH)
Smith attends Cleveland Glenville, so the expectation is that this safety with 4.41 speed will eventually be a Buckeye.
#145 Myles Autry (5-11 170) #17 RB (Norcross GA)
Autry, ranked the #17 RB in the nation by Scout, has named Ohio State his leader in the past and plans to visit in the spring.
#156 Saeed Blacknall (6-3 190) #25 WR (Englishtown NJ)
Blacknall is receiving offers from all over the nation at the moment, so the Buckeyes will have their work cut out for them in this one.
#185 Dillon Bates (6-3 225) #13 OLB (Ponte Vedra FL)
Bates is one of the many top linebackers the Buckeyes are looking at, and he does plan to visit Ohio State.
#195 Jesse Aniebonam (6-4 225) #25 DE (Olney MD)
Aniebonam had the Buckeyes in his top five previously, but he is adding new offers everyday, so that top five can probably be disregarded.
#216 Derek Kief (6-5 195) #32 WR (Cincinnati OH)
Kief recently received an offer from Ohio State, and the Buckeyes are considered a heavy favorite here.
#225 Alex Bars (6-6 286) #25 OT (Nashville TN)
Bars has a brother at Penn State and a brother at Michigan, but he is still planning on visiting Ohio State.
#259 Poona Ford (6-1 275) #20 DT (Hilton Head Island SC)
Ford does not yet hold an Ohio State offer, but he is planning on attending an OSU summer camp in order to earn one.
#284 Jeb Blazevich (6-5 240) #10 TE (Charlotte NC)
Blazevich is one of the Buckeyes top targets at tight end, and there is mutual interest.
#298 Anthony Moten (6-3 260) #22 DT (Ft Lauderdale FL)
Moten is the teammate of Ohio State signee Joey Bosa, and could be the second act of a three-part pipeline involving Bosa's younger brother Nick, a top 2016 prospect.
