Football Recruiting
Ohio Speedster Denzel Ward is Latest 2015 Buckeye Commitment
By Tony Gerdeman

COLUMBUS, Ohio — It has been an extremely busy week for Ohio State on the recruiting trail, and the good news continued on Thursday with the commitment of three-star cornerback Denzel Ward out of Nordonia High School in Macedonia, Ohio.

Ward (5-11 170) earned an offer at Ohio State's position camp on Thursday and accepted it soon after. He also held offers from Cincinnati, Kentucky, Syracuse, Rutgers and Washington State.

The recruiting services all rank Ward as a three-star prospect with 247Sports rating him the highest, as their #38 cornerback. Rivals ranks him #54 and Scout has him #67 overall at the position.

Ward burst onto the scene in February after running a hand-timed 4.31 at the Best of the Midwest Combine. He also shined in coverage, and ended up earning a Cincinnati offer on the spot.

He had to wait a little bit longer and work a little bit harder to earn the Ohio State offer, however, but it paid off in a big way for the senior to be.

Following his camp performance, scout John McCallister gave us the lowdown on what kind of player Ward is and can be.

"Denzel Ward, I liked him last year. He's probably 5-10 or 5-11, and he's fast. But what he really does is he's explosive. He long-jumped just over 23' last year. He's a state qualifier. He's another guy that's just developing, but he's fast. I saw him play, I really liked him as a kickoff and punt returner.

"Is he 'Big Ten good', I don't know yet. But I think he's got a chance to be really good because he's just getting going now. He's just starting to take off and understand what this all is. He is fast. He might be 5-11 now. As far as being on offense or defense, I always think these guys need to try corner first. You can always find receivers. Corners are hard to find."

If Ward does end up at cornerback, that gives the Buckeyes two commitments at that position (Jamel Dean), which is what they usually shoot for every year.

There is still room for more, considering the habit of turning cornerbacks into safeties who can cover, as well as Ward's possibilities on offense.

The 2015 recruiting class now stands at nine players, with room for maybe up to another dozen or so.
