St. Ignatius Defensive End Dre'Mont Jones Commits to Ohio State
By Tony Gerdeman
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The 2015 Ohio State recruiting class has grown by one with Wednesday's announcement that defensive end Dre'Mont Jones has committed to play football for the Buckeyes.
Jones (6-5 250) is a four-star prospect and the #9 strongside defensive end in the nation per 247Sports. He chose the Buckeyes over offers from Florida State, Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame.
Jones broke the news via Twitter.
Last year was Jones's first full season of varsity football, but he performed well enough to be named Second-Team All-District after notching 43 tackles and five sacks as a junior.
Ohio State offered Jones way back in February, and while he took some time to make his decision, he was always thought to be headed for Columbus.
What kind of player are the Buckeyes getting in Jones?
"He's just learning the game," scout John McCallister explained when Jones was offered.
"It sounds silly, but his best football is ahead of him, for sure. I think he got to the game late. He was just in the system at Ignatius, and then all of a sudden he got bigger and stronger. He did a really good job in the game that I saw of coming off of the edge. The thing that he has to do is keep guys off of his body and learn to change direction, but he's got much more positive than negative."
What has made Jones so impressive in such a short period of time is his frame and athleticism. Together they make for a very nice combination, and provide a near-prototype of what a defensive end should look like.
"He's big and he's long," McCallister said.
"He just really came out of nowhere last year. He plays the rush end. He's got really good closing speed. He's just got a big frame. He also plays basketball and he runs the court. He gets up and down the court in basketball really well. That's what I think is really impressive. He runs the court really well."
Jones becomes the first defensive lineman in the 2015 class for the Buckeyes, but he's not likely to be the last. Ohio State is also very much involved with Minnesota defensive end Jashon Cornell, who is rated a five-star prospect by both ESPN and 247Sports. Cornell will make his decision known on August 28.
With Jones now in the fold, the Buckeyes have a nice start to a defensive line class that may only feature three or four players.
