Football Recruiting
Hard-Hitting Safety Ben Edwards is OSU's Third Commit for 2015
By Tony Gerdeman

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The future of the Ohio State defense just got a little bit more violent on Tuesday, but in a good way, as Jacksonville, Florida safety Ben Edwards announced via Twitter that he had committed to play for Urban Meyer and the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Edwards, the #5 safety in the 2015 class per Rivals, committed to the Buckeyes over offers from Stanford, Penn State, Auburn, UCLA and Notre Dame.

"Ben’s a great kid, he can play anywhere," his coach Verlon Dorminey told the Florida Times-Union. "He’s got a 3.86 (grade point average) in the classroom, he’s already got the test scores. Stanford’s recruiting him, Northwestern’s recruiting him, they’ve both offered. He’s easy to coach. He just will fly downhill and just knock you out. He’s fearless."

Originally thought to be an Auburn lean, an Ohio State offer three weeks ago threw a Scarlet and Gray wrench into the situation. Clearly, it didn't take much for the Buckeyes to move to the very top of the list for the second-team All-State selection.

His highlight tape shows a player who finds contact quite agreeable, but the recruiting services are anything but agreeable when it comes to where they rank Edwards.

Edwards is a teammate of two other Ohio State targets as well. Cornerback Kevin Toliver is one of the top players in the state, but he is currently committed to LSU. Linebacker Jeffery Holland is also one of the top 10 players in the state. Both are five-star prospects, so this could help with Ohio State's recruitment of them, but both appear to be long shots for the Buckeyes at this point.

Ohio State now has three commitments in the 2015 class, and two of them are from the state of Florida. Cornerback Jamel Dean (Cocoa, FL) is the #27 player in the state per the Orlando Sentinel, and Edwards is the #41 player.

The third commitment, who was also the first commitment in the 2015 class, is Eric Glover-Williams, a four-star 5-foot-9 athlete from Canton McKinley.
