Buckeyes Go Green With Latest Commit
By Tony Gerdeman

COLUMBUS, Ohio — After going nearly four months without a verbal commitment, the Buckeyes have landed two in the span of two weeks.

Following an impressive Ohio State camp performance on Sunday, the Buckeyes offered safety Tyler Green (6-3 195), and Green committed shortly thereafter.

Green, who plays at DeMatha Catholic in Maryland, is rated as a four-star prospect and the #11 safety in the nation by 247Sports. The other three services see Green as a three-star prospect, though Rivals has him as their #18 safety.

This wasn't Green's first outstanding camp performance, as he attended the NFTC in Washington D.C. at the end of April and was one of just eight attendees at the camp who earned an invite to The Opening in July.

Green, who ran a 4.41 and 4.40 at Ohio State's camp, is a big safety who some think could even end up at cornerback. In these camp settings, he has shown the ability to stay with receivers in one-on-one situations.

He also had offers from Maryland, North Carolina State and Virginia, but clearly it was Ohio State that he was waiting on.

Green's size, speed and range is an intriguing combination, and isn't unlike that of current starter Tyvis Powell. Like Green, Powell was a three-star prospect by most accounts, but after a redshirt season in 2012, he was on the field and starting in 2013.

The Buckeye roster features some young and talented safeties, with more hitting campus this summer, but that didn't stop them from wanting another.

The current depth chart features Powell, Vonn Bell and Cameron Burrows, each of whom have sophomore eligibility. That number will grow soon with the addition of incoming freshmen Erick Smith and Malik Hooker. There is also Ron Tanner, who will be a senior when Green arrives in 2015.

Ohio State may not need Green right away, but if he can put himself on the Tyvis Powell track, the Buckeyes will take it.
