Looking Forward: 2015 Defensive Backs
By Tony Gerdeman

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Buckeyes already have three defensive backs in the 2015 class, which begs the question of how many more they are looking to land.

They won't be graduating any safeties from the 2014 roster, but they did lose one when redshirt freshman Jayme Thompson transferred following the spring. Verbal commit Tyler Green has already -- in essence -- replaced Thompson's spot in 2015, and one more safety in this class is expected.

OSU already has the pair of cornerbacks they set out to land, though that doesn't mean they're done looking. Who are the names to know in the 2015 class? Let's take a look.

Jamel Dean (Ohio State) Cocoa, Florida
Rivals ☆☆☆  #40 Cornerback
Scout ☆☆ ☆ #55 Cornerback
247Sports ☆☆☆☆ #21 Cornerback
ESPN ☆☆ ☆☆ #11 Cornerback
Dean (6-1 180) was Ohio State's second commitment of the 2015 class when he verbaled back in December. He's recovering from an ACL tear suffered last season. He is fast and has the length that coaches look for in press corners. He also holds offers from Miami (FL), Florida and Mississippi State.

Denzel Ward (Ohio State) Macedonia, Ohio
Rivals☆☆ ☆ #54 Cornerback
Scout ☆☆☆  #67 Cornerback
247Sports ☆☆☆ #38 Cornerback
ESPN Not Rated
Ward (5-11 165) is Ohio State's most recent 2015 commitment after earning an offer at OSU''s camp. Has been timed in the 4.3s and was disappointed in his 4.4s at the Ohio State camp earlier in the week. Is a tremendous athlete who is also physical.

Tyler Green (Ohio State) Hyattsville, Maryland
Rivals ☆☆☆ #18 Safety
Scout ☆☆☆ #82 Wide Receiver
247Sports ☆☆☆☆ #14 Safety
ESPN ☆☆☆ #56 Safety
Green (6-3 195) was a camp offer like Denzel Ward, and he committed just about as quickly. He showed tremendous athleticism and ran a pair of low 4.4s. He will need to improve in pass coverage, but the tools are definitely there. He also had offers from Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina State.

Jordan Whitehead (Uncommitted) Monaca, PA
Rivals ☆☆☆ ☆ #27 Cornerback
Scout ☆☆☆ ☆ #20 Cornerback
247Sports ☆☆☆☆ #25 Cornerback
ESPN ☆☆☆☆ #15 Cornerback
Whitehead (6-0 180) has offers from Ohio State, Florida State, Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame. The Buckeyes are in a good position here, but the Nittany Lions will obviously be tough to beat. There is also the small matter of OSU already having two cornerbacks in the class. Will they continue to go after more?

Rashad Roundtree (Uncommitted) Evans, Georgia
Rivals ☆☆☆☆☆ #2 Safety
Scout ☆☆☆☆ #6 Safety
247Sports ☆☆☆☆ #6 Safety
ESPN ☆☆☆☆ #3 Safety
Roundtree (6-1 195) is one of the top safeties in the nation, and he's just coming off of a visit to Ohio State. He will likely be back for an official visit, but getting him away from UGA is going to prove very, very difficult.

Brian Cole (Uncommitted) Saginaw, Michigan
Rivals ☆☆☆☆ #7 Athlete
Scout ☆☆☆☆ #5 Wide Receiver
247Sports ☆☆☆☆ #2 Athlete
ESPN ☆☆☆☆ #8 Athlete

Cole (6-2 190) will likely come down to Michigan and Michigan State, but the Buckeyes are certainly working hard for his services. He could end up at safety or receiver, and he has the ball skills to excel at both.

Kendrell McFadden (West Virginina) Hollywood, FL
Rivals ☆☆☆☆ #12 Safety
Scout ☆☆☆☆ #20 Safety
247Sports ☆☆☆☆ #12 Safety
ESPN ☆☆☆☆ #12 Safety
McFadden (6-4 193) is committed to West Virginia, but has offers from Ohio State, Alabama, Florida State, LSU and Texas A&M. Obviously, it would be a surprise to see him stick with the Mountaineers. He was on campus at OSU this past week.

Darrell Miller (Uncommitted) Cedar Hill, Texas
Rivals ☆☆☆ Cornerback
Scout ☆☆☆ #68 Cornerback
247Sports ☆☆☆ #61 Cornerback
ESPN Not Rated
Miller (5-11 173) earned an offer at an Ohio State camp last week. He also holds offers from Michigan State, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Kansas State and Boise State. He plans to decide by the end of summer.

2016 Defensive Backs

Patrice Rene (Uncommitted) Ontario, Canada
Rivals Not Rated
Scout Not Rated
247Sports ☆☆☆☆ #7 Cornerback
ESPN Not Rated
Rene (6-1 180) impressed several schools at the recent Sound Mind, Sound Body camp in Detroit. He earned an offer from Ohio State. He also has offers from Syracuse, Rutgers and Indiana.

Tyrece Speaight (Uncommitted) Akron, Ohio
Rivals Not Rated
Scout ☆☆☆☆ #14 Cornerback
247Sports ☆☆☆☆ #14 Athlete
ESPN Not Rated
Speaight (5-10 173) attends St. Vincent - St. Mary, but does not yet hold any offers. If the offers come as many expect, this could be an Ohio State - Michigan battle.
