COLUMBUS, Ohio — Compared to the last few weeks, this past week was a quiet one for the Buckeyes. Not a single verbal commitment came Ohio State's way in the last week.
Sunday Recruiting Rundown — June 29
By Tony Gerdeman
That could very well be changing in a big way over this next week, however. Last Monday, five-star linebacker Justin Hilliard scheduled his commitment announcement for this Wednesday, July 2.
Then on Sunday the news broke that five-star defensive end Jashon Cornell would be deciding on that same day, and then suddenly everybody began mentioning the words "package deal".
Both will be announcing separately on ESPN.com, with the program set to start at 10:00 a.m.
The Cornell news comes on the heels of five-star defensive end Josh Sweat's visit to Ohio State earlier in the week. By all accounts the visit went well, which was entirely expected.
The key moving forward for Ohio State will be getting Sweat back on campus for an official visit, and right now that looks like a pretty good probability.
If the Buckeyes do land Cornell and Hilliard on Wednesday, expect them to turn into recruiters for OSU, especially when they attend The Opening with Sweat in July.
Three-Star RB to Announce Monday
The announcements of Jashon Cornell and Justin Hilliard aren't the only ones taking place this week, as three-star running back T.J. Simmons (6-0 195) is announcing on Monday.
Simmons tweeted that he would be choosing between UCLA, Florida, Ohio State and LSU.
Considering the running backs that the Buckeyes are currently involved with, there is some question whether the OSU coaches would even accept his commitment at this time.
It shouldn't matter, however, as UCLA is the heavy favorite here.
Scarlett Looking at Ohio State?
Four-star running back Jordan Scarlett (5-11 210) finally decommitted from Florida Atlantic this past week, which was expected to happen since the day he surprisingly committed to them months ago.
The decommitment came one day after an unofficial visit to the University of Miami, so the Canes are certainly one to watch for the St. Thomas Aquinas tailback.
Scarlett is already slated to play in the Army All-American Bowl in January.
According to Rivals, Scarlett has plans to visit both Florida State and Ohio State in the near future. With four-star tailback L.J. Scott's decision coming in July, Scarlett's visit may depend on which school (Michigan State or Ohio State) Scott ends up choosing.
Outstanding Middle Linebacker Has OSU in Top 10
Jahvoni Simmons (6-1 225), the nation's #2 inside linebacker in the 2015 class per the 247Sports Composite ranking, released his top 10 on Saturday and the Buckeyes were right in the mix.
The top 10 looks like this (alphabetical order): Alabama, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin.
Simmons has been on Ohio State's board for a while now, but if the Buckeyes land Justin Hilliard on Wednesday, then getting a commitment from Simmons would be somewhat redundant and unlikely.
Buckeyes in Top Six for Kansas Tight End
If recruiting was a cartoon, then the Buckeyes would be Charlie Brown trying to kick a football, and the tight ends would be Lucy, down on one knee, getting ready to yank the ball away as OSU approached.
In other words, things have not gone well for Ohio State in their search for a tight end. Things might be getting a little better, however, as three-star tight end Josh Moore (6-5 250) out of Olathe, Kansas has OSU in his top six.
He released his list on Twitter and it looks like this (no particular order): Kansas, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Florida State, Auburn, Missouri. He has offers from each of the six schools.
His decision will likely come after taking official visits, of which Ohio State should be one.
2015 Four-Star Receiver Has OSU in Top Two
Devante Peete, a four-star 6-foot-6 receiver out of Florida has a top two of Ohio State and Miami (FL) per 247Sports.
Peete is the #15 receiver in the nation per ESPN, though 247Sports ranks him the #94 receiver. Regardless, his offer list, which includes Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson, Florida State and LSU, is as impressive as anybody else's in the nation.
Peete plays at St. Thomas Aquinas, which is where current Buckeye Joey Bosa played. It is also where 2015 running back Jordan Scarlett plays. Needless to say, the Buckeye coaches are very well-connected when it comes to the school.
Still, it would be a slight surprise to see Peete leave the state and choose Ohio State.
