Football Recruiting
Buckeyes Land Five-Star DE Jashon Cornell
By Tony Gerdeman

COLUMBUS, Ohio — As expected, Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes earned a verbal commitment from five-star defensive end Jashon Cornell (St. Paul, MN) on Wednesday morning.

Announcing live on, Cornell let the world know his decision by snatching up an Ohio State cap and placing it on his head. He cited his relationship with defensive line coach Larry Johnson as a significant reason why he decided to become a Buckeye.

Cornell (6-3 265) is a five-star prospect according to both 247Sports and ESPN, and he is the #16 player overall in the 2015 class per ESPN. Scout and Rivals both list him as a four-star prospect, though each has him ranked in the top 100 players in the nation.

With his choice of just about any school in the nation, Cornell chose the Buckeyes over offers from Notre Dame, Michigan State, Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma, Stanford, USC and the like.

Both Michigan State and Notre Dame had led at one point for him, but a visit to Ohio State this summer changed his focus towards the Buckeyes.

As a player he is already an advanced pass rusher who flashes quickness around the edge, but will also turn inside just as aggressively. He has run a 4.69 40-yard dash, so he also has the speed to pursue plays.

Cornell is still growing, so there is the possibility that he might move inside to defensive tackle, not unlike current the Buckeyes' two current starting tackles Adolphus Washington and Michael Bennett. That's not necessarily the plan at the moment, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see it happen down the road.

Cornell was named First-Team All-State in 2013 and is the first Buckeye commit from the state of Minnesota since defensive lineman Willie Mobley in the 2008 class. Mobley then eventually transferred to Arizona.

Three-time All-American linebacker James Laurinaitis, a 2005 commitment, was also from Minnesota.

Cornell does still have visits to Michigan State and Penn State scheduled, but he said that those visits will have no impact on his decision.

Wednesday was a good day for Ohio State recruiting as they also landed five-star linebacker Justin Hilliard (6-2 230) out of Cincinnati St. Xavier.

Up next for the Buckeyes is the announcement from four-star Cleveland Benedictine linebacker Jerome Baker's on Friday July 11.
