It was an eventful weekend for many current and past Buckeye wrestlers.
Malik Heinselman, Dylan D’Emilio, Jordan Decatur, Sammy Sasso, Jaden Mattox, and Gavin Hoffman all competed in the United World Wrestling Junior Freestyle Nationals in Las Vegas.
Malik Heinselman was the number one overall seed in the 57 kg weight class. Heinselman was crowned champion in this weight class finishing 5-0 with 4 technical fall wins. (Technical fall means a wrestler achieves a ten-point lead over their opponent at any stage during a freestyle match.)
Dylan D’Emilio was the number 5 seed in the 61 kg class. D’Emilio won his first match 5-2 but lost 5-4 in the round of 32.
Jordan Decatur also wrestled in the 61 kg class, where he was the number 2 overall seed in the weight class. Decatur started the tournament with technical fall wins in the first 3 rounds before losing 8-2 in the quarterfinals.
Sammy Sasso was the overall number 1 seed in the 70 kg weight class and was crowned champion, finishing 6-0 with 2 technical fall wins and two pins.
Jaden Mattox was an unseeded participant in the 74 kg weight class. Mattox made it to the round of 16 before losing to the number 6 seed.
Lastly, Gavin Hoffman was the number 2 overall seed in the 86 kg weight class. Hoffman looked very good in this tournament making it to the semifinals before losing to Trent Hidlay 8-1. Hidlay was later crowned champion of the 86 kg weight class.
Heinselman, Sasso, and Hoffman all qualified for the Junior World team trials on May 17-18 in Raleigh, NC. Heinselman and Sasso will start their Junior World Team trials in the best of three bouts versus the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament champions. The winner of the best of three series will represent Team USA in the UWW Junior World Championships August 12-18 in Tallinn, Estonia.
Nathan Tomasello, Johnni DiJulius, Joey Mckenna, Myles Martin, and Kollin Moore all wrestled in the Senior US Open Championships.
Nathan Tomasello was the number 4 seed in the 57 kg weight class. Tomasello had a bye in the first round and technical fall wins in the next 3 rounds. Tomasello was disqualified in the semifinals for multiple hands to the face calls.
Tomasello cannot seem to catch a break between suffering multiple injuries and now, in my opinion, a nefarious disqualification. Tomasello looked dominant against his first 3 opponents winning by technical fall in each round. In conclusion, when Tomasello is healthy and on his game, very few people on this planet can beat him.
Johnny DeJulius was the number 8 seed in the 61 kg weight class. DeJulius lost 5-1 in the round of 16.
Joey Mckenna was the number 3 seed in the 65 kg weight class. Mckenna made it to the round of 16 before losing to Dean Heil 12-9.
Myles Martin was the number 2 seed in the 86 kg weight class. Martin made it to the semifinals before losing to Pat Downey 9-7. Downey later went on to win the 86 kg weight class.
Kollin Moore was the number 4 seed in the 92 kg weight class. Kollin started out with 3 technical fall victories before falling 12-7 in the semi-finals.
