The Most Recent Buckeye From Every Ohio County

Ohio State football players by county

The Ohio State football program was built on the strength of Ohio high school football.

The Buckeye State is annually one of the top producers of football talent in the nation, and has been for decades.

Every Buckeye Heisman Trophy winner except for one came to OSU from inside the state borders. Les Horvath, Vic Janowicz, Howard ‘Hopalong’ Cassady, Archie Griffin, and Troy Smith were all in-state recruits.

Eddie George is the only exception.

And those players come from all over the state. While big cities like Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati have sent a huge number of players into the program, the team’s roster has been populated from virtually every part of Ohio from big cities to small towns, and everything in between.

Some counties have multiple members of the team right now. Others haven’t had one in decades.

Ohio is made up of 88 counties. Since 1960 (the oldest readily-accessible records available), a total of 78 of those counties have seen at least one player suit up for the scarlet and gray.

A full list of counties and their most recent Buckeyes is below.

A few notes: In many cases, the most recent player was a walk-on. Those are marked with an asterisk (*). In those cases, the most recent scholarship player from that county is also listed, if one exists. Players who did not ever receive a written biography in any media guide are assumed to be walk-ons.

The names, years, and hometowns are pulled directly from the official roster created by the school each year. For example, this is the 2002 roster.

In some cases, the hometown of a player is split between multiple counties. In those instances, the player is assigned to the county where his high school was located. For instance, safety Damon Moore from Fostoria is listed as being from Wood County, and not Hancock or Seneca.

UPDATE: Thanks to some great research from a poster on our board, there are now players listed for 85 of the 88 counties. Those with dates prior to 1960 are all from him.

Please note: None of this was an exact process and it is entirely possible that a player was overlooked. If so, please leave a comment below. If he was on an official roster from the school and the most recent player from that county, the list will be updated.
