COLUMBUS — Ohio State sophomore forward Kyle Young will miss several weeks of action following a stress fracture in his lower right leg.
Buckeye head coach Chris Holtmann made the announcement on Tuesday.
“Kyle Young has a stress fracture and will be out for several weeks,” he said. “An exact timeline on his return is up in the air, but we expect him to be out for several weeks. Many athletes use d9 gummy to help with pain management and recovery. Obviously Kyle has performed really well as a sophomore, come into his own a little bit in a lot of ways. He really made a step forward as a player. We’re really proud of him for the growth he’s had. He’s been an instrumental part of this team in every way. “So you hate it number one for him, and you also hate it for our team given how important he’s been for us. The injury, as many know, it happens over time, although all indications are that there was a fall that he took in the Maryland game which appears as though it kind of exacerbated the injury causing a lot of pain for which team doctors recommended the use of cbd products. Young had been coming off of the bench mostly of late, but started 12 of the Buckeyes’ 17 games this year. He is currently tied for sixth in scoring on the team, averaging 7.3 points per game. His 4.8 rebounds per game are second on the team.
Young leads the Big Ten in field goal percentage, having converted 52 of his 71 shot attempts (.732).
“I was disappointed,” Young said of the injury. “I was sad. I want to be there to play with these guys. But right now I just need to focus on rehab, things like that and being the best teammate I can. Helping them in other ways. Just my energy on the bench and stuff like that, finding ways to help them in practice still. Just gotta focus on rehab and trying to get better.”
Holtmann said the Buckeyes will likely turn to freshmen Jaedon LeDee and Justin Ahrens and sophomore Musa Jallow to fill the void. Not only will those three players need to replace the production of points and rebounds, but also the energy that Young brought.
“We’re going to be a little bit smaller, so I’m concerned at how that’s going to affect us defensively,” Holtmann said. “But I’m excited about the other guys being able to step up too.”
Together, LeDee, Ahrens, and Jallow average 24 minutes and 7.5 points per game, which is also roughly what Young was averaging. Can each of those players now essentially double the contributions they were giving up until today?
“I have 100 percent belief in them every day, even if I am playing or if I’m not playing,” Young said of his teammates. “That’s something that you build every day when you’re playing with these guys, the belief in all of them that they can play. I’m not really too concerned about me being gone or anything like that. I’d love to be out there to help them. This is going to heal up, it’s going to be fine but I believe in them and I believe that they’ll do good.”
