Nick Bosa, Tyquan Lewis & Denzel Ward First-Team All-Big Ten
Trio headlines a 14-honoree day for the Buckeyes; Offensive all-Big Ten announced Wednesday
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Big Ten Conference announced its all-Big Ten teams on defense and special teams Tuesday and the Ohio State Buckeyes were well represented with three first-team honorees – DE Nick Bosa, DE Tyquan Lewis and CB Denzel Ward – and a total of 12 players earning accolades altogether.
Lewis and Bosa were each selected to the all-Big Ten first team on both the coaches and the media ballots while Ward earned first-team accolades on the media vote.
Lewis, who has 6.5 tackles-for-loss this year for minus-39 yards plus five quarterback sacks, is now a two-time first-team performer as he also was selected to both first teams last season. A fifth-year senior, Lewis has already graduated with his degree in sociology. He is from Tarboro, N.C.
Bosa, a sophomore from Fort Lauderdale, Fla, leads the Buckeyes and ranks eighth in the Big Ten with 12.5 tackles-for-loss, totaling 56 yards, and he also leads the team in quarterback sacks with six. He ranks second among the team’s defensive linemen with 28 tackles on the season.
Ward, like Bosa a first-year starter for the Buckeyes, has the third-most passes defended in the Big Ten – 14; 13 pass break-ups and one interception – while also contributing 34 tackles and two critical blocked kicks: a punt in the win over Penn State and an extra point in the win last week over Michigan. Ward is from Macedonia, Ohio.
Second Team
Sam Hubbard, a fourth-year junior who graduates in December with his degree in finance, was named second team all-Big Ten by both the coaches and the media. From Cincinnati, Hubbard is a two-year starting defensive end for the Buckeyes and the leading tackler among the team’s defensive linemen with 36 tackles, including 10.0 tackles for loss and 4.5 quarterback sacks. He is the Big Ten defensive player of the week after his five-tackle, 2.5-quarterback sack game vs. Michigan.
Junior Parris Campbell was named the league’s second-team return specialist by the media. The junior from Akron averaged 36.6 yards per kickoff return with nine returns and a long of 82 yards.
Third Team
A total of five players, including senior safety Damon Webb, sophomore defensive tackle Dre’mont Jones and sophomore safety Jordan Fuller were named all-Big Ten Conference third-team.
Webb, from Detroit, is the team leader with three interceptions and he ranks second with 52 total tackles. Jones, who is from Cleveland, has 19 tackles, including 5.0 tackles-for-loss. And Fuller is the Buckeyes leading tackler with 57 tackles. The Old Tappan, N.J., native also has two interceptions, including one inside two minutes to play and the Buckeyes up by four at Michigan last week.
Both Ohio State kickers also picked up all-Big Ten third-team honors by the coaches and the media. Kicker Sean Nuernberger, from Buckner, Ky., is 14-of-17 in field goals this season and has made all 65 of his extra point tries, breaking the Big Ten record for consecutive placements in the process and extending it now to 171 consecutive.
Freshman punter Drue Chrisman, from Lawrenceburg, Ind., is second in the Big Ten with a 43.7 yard average. Ohio State is first in the Big Ten in net punting at 40.8 yards per punt.
