COLUMBUS — Prior to the media being allowed in to watch 45 minutes of practice on Monday, an Ohio State football spokesman advised reporters that redshirt sophomore middle linebacker Tuf Borland would not be on the field due to injury. The injury wasn’t disclosed, but Urban Meyer will make a statement after practice.
In Borland’s place as the No. 1 middle linebacker during the viewing window was fourth-year junior Justin Hilliard. Behind him was sophomore Baron Browning.
Starting safety Jordan Fuller was sporting an orange jersey, which is generally indicative of a minor injury. He was still taking part in some drills.
Redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Antwuan Jackson was on the practice field, but only taking part in non-physical contact drills. Redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Malik Barrow was not yet practicing, though he was running and jogging during warmups.
Depth Charting
We did not get to see any type of scrimmaging, and the substitution patters were such that various players were repping with the ones. The quarterbacks shared reps again.
With left guard Michael Jordan out for the spring, fifth-year senior Malcolm Pridgeon was with the ones. He got a good chewing after one particular play from Greg Studrawa. The rest of the first line on the day was Josh Alabi at left tackle, Brady Taylor at center, Demetrius Knox at right guard, and Thayer Munford at right tackle. Isaiah Prince was standing by. He did not look to be in any distress.
The No. 2 center was redshirt freshman center Josh Myers, while fourth-year junior Matt Burrell was the No. 2 left guard. Walk-on Kevin Woidke was the No. 2 left tackle, while redshirt freshman Wyatt Davis was at right guard and true freshman Max Wray was at right tackle with the twos.
Both Taylor and Myers had some bad snaps in drills. Matthew Jones and Burrell also worked at center during some drills.
It may mean nothing, but sophomore Amir Riep was drilling in front of sophomore Isaiah Pryor. That may have been a result of Jordan Fuller’s injury. We didn’t see the safeties participate in any scrimmage drills, so take that information with a grain of salt.
Junior linebacker Keandre Jones was with both the ones and twos at the Will. Sophomore Pete Werner was with the twos at Sam, behind Malik Harrison.
Demario McCall and Terry McLaurin were the only punt returners on the day.
Emptying the Notebook
A couple of wide receivers stood out. Austin Mack had a few touchdown catches in the red zone drills, and Jaylen Harris made a nice leaping catch for a score as well.
Harris did not look as good in one of the blocking drills we saw.
Baron Browning had a nice rep in a pass rush drill around tight end Rashod Berry.
Shaun Wade had a nice pass breakup in the red zone on a throw from Tate Martell. He jumped an out route and was able to bat the pass down.
Sophomore defensive tackle Haskell Garrett got some time with the ones alongside fourth-year junior nose tackle Davon Hamilton.
Future NFL’ers Nick Bosa and Dre’Mont Jones spent a portion of the practice working alone on pass rush drills.
Freshman defensive tackle Tommy Togiai got some reps with the twos playing next to Robert Landers. Togiai also teamed up with redshirt freshman nose tackle Jerron Cage.
Redshirt sophomore tight end Luke Farrell had a nice pass protection drill against Keandre Jones.
