Burrell provided quality reps when given the opportunity, and even showed his versatility last week with a very good performance at Left Tackle.
In fact, I felt he could make an impact at Left tackle in the 2018 season, despite less than ideal size and arm length.
The departure will have a trickle-down effect in terms of who will benefit the most.
But more importantly, it is a sign of strength along the interior offensive line.
Redshirt sophomore Gavin Cupp appears to have had a solid spring and his performance in the Spring Game was evidence of his improvement.
He showed the ability to be a dominant run blocker against a very good defensive line and was able to execute the more difficult blocks that are needed to run Inside Zone.
Another Guard who will benefit from the departure of Burrell is redshirt freshman Wyatt Davis.
The once highly-recruited Guard from St. John Bosco in Bellflower, California has also proven to be worthy of meaningful snaps this coming Fall.
Davis showed very good timing and awareness to execute a difficult combo block as well as lower body power to clear a running lane at the goal line during last week’s Spring Game.
Davis also showed the ability to anchor in pass protection, giving Joe Burrow time to deliver the ball.
Cupp and Davis will likely serve as backups behind the likes of Michael Jordan, Branden Bowen, Malcolm Pridgeon, and Demetrius Knox, but they have shown the ability to step in and be effective if called upon.
Arizona State Basketball may have a trademark on “Guard U,” but Ohio State Football has proven to be the real Guard U in recent history.
