Ohio State head football coach Urban Meyer took part in the Big Ten coaches spring football teleconference on Wednesday. He only spoke for a few minutes, but he had a handful of updates on his Buckeyes. This is the first time in over a week that Meyer has spoken with reporters about his team. Here are the highlights.
+ All three quarterbacks are close right now. At times you wish one guy would separate. They are close not because of poor performance, but because they’re all playing well. He can’t name a one. He can’t even name a three. Today was their best practice as a group of spring ball. He’s not going to share what’s going on in-house with the quarterbacks. He’s got to do right by the team and right by the player.
+ They don’t want to have official visits this spring for players who aren’t going to decide until this winter. They will host some players who are looking to decide sooner. “It’s going to be interesting.” Timing is of the essence.
+ Jordan Fuller has secured the field safety spot, but the other safety spot is still open between Isaiah Pryor, Jahsen Wint, and Brendon White. Center is also a bit of a question right now in terms of who it will be, but Brady Taylor has had a great spring. Luke Farrell has moved to the top of the tight end competition, but there is still stuff that needs to be finalized there.
+ Official visits during the fall are much different because you can’t spend as much time with the players. During the spring there is more time.
+ Thayer Munford has done great things this spring. “I’m a fan of Thayer.” He came from some tough situations and has done very well for himself. “He has earned a starting spot.”
+ Meyer believes all three quarterbacks will be good enough to start by the time the season rolls around. They’re not there yet, but they’ll get the proper development this summer to get there.
+ Tommy Togiai lost his black stripe because he does everything right. It’s something they don’t take lightly to remove black stripes. It’s a heck of an honor. He’s a great guy to have on the team.
+ Meyer thinks the defensive tackles will be very deep this season. Injuries have kept them from being there this spring. Dre’Mont Jones has been elite this spring, even better than he was last year. “I think it will be a strength once we have everyone full speed by the fall.”
