Scottsdale, Arizona (Chaparral High School) running back Darvon Hubbard committed to Ohio State Wednesday night. He announced his commitment via Twitter by writing, “I’m coming home.”
Hubbard, originally from Akron, is a 2020 running back who is ranked the No. 23 prospect at his position by the 247Sports Composite. He is the No. 232 player overall. Per 247’s own rankings, Hubbard is the No. 10 tailback in the nation and the No. 84 player overall.
Hubbard (6-0 200) earned an offer at OSU’s Friday Night Lights camp last month and wasn’t expected to wait too long before committing.
Hubbard committed to the Buckeyes over offers from Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Michigan State, Michigan, and Bowling Green.
After a sophomore season of around 500 yards rushing last year for Hubbard, offers had been coming fast and furious over the spring and summer. Once the Ohio State offer came, however, the writing was on the wall.
Hubbard is also the teammate of current 2020 quarterback Jack Miller, who committed to the Buckeyes earlier this summer.
Following Friday Night Lights, Miller talked about what it was like playing with Hubbard for the first time last season as sophomores.
“It was awesome,” he said. “He takes lot of pressure off of me. Short-yardage situations, it gets the ball out of my hands. If the defense is bailing, I can just give the ball to him and he’ll run and score touchdowns and make people miss. He’s awesome.”
As a runner, Hubbard routinely shows patience in looking for the right hole, and displays the vision to find it. Speed does not appear to be an issue, as you can see in the highlights below.
Hubbard is now the sixth commitment for the Buckeyes in the 2020 recruiting class, and the fifth offensive player. He joins the aforementioned Jack Miller, as well as offensive linemen Jake Wray, Luke Wypler, and Paris Johnson. Cornerback Lejond Cavazos is the lone defensive player in the class.
The class is currently ranked second in the nation and first in the Big Ten.
