Noah Cain, a 4-star running back prospect from IMG Academy in Florida just announced his “Final 6” schools and Ohio State made the cut.
The Buckeyes are joined by national powers Oklahoma, LSU, Texas, Penn State, and Auburn in that group.
Cain lived in Texas before transferring to IMG, so it’s not a shock that the Longhorns are currently favored to win his commitment, with 61 percent of the Crystal Ball selections. LSU is second with 22 percent.
Cain is currently ranked as the No. 6 running back in the 2019 class, and the 102nd-best player overall.
He has already been chosen to play in the Under Armour All-American game.
Cain last visited Columbus on an unofficial trip in March. Whether he visits again will tell you all you need to know about where the Buckeyes stand in his mind.
Recruits can make up to five official visits, paid for by the school, so one of the finalists won’t make the cut.
OSU was considered a serious threat to land Cain earlier this year, but that all changed when the Buckeyes added verbals from a pair of prospects.
Four-star Indiana running back Sampson James committed to the 2019 class back in March. Steele Chambers, a 4-star from Georgia who could play running back for the Buckeyes as well, committed in April.
Once those two jumped onboard, it became unlikely the Buckeyes would take a third back in this class.
Even assuming Mike Weber leaves for the NFL after the 2018 season, the Buckeyes would still have J.K. Dobbins, Master Teague, and Brian Snead on the roster, along with guys like Jaelin Gill and Demario McCall who will take carries as well. Once you add in James and Chambers, and it’s hard to see where another running back would fit.
Cain remains one of the nation’s most talented ballcarriers, and his recruitment is worth keeping an eye on. But for now, don’t expect him to end up a Buckeye.
