Tate Martell Wins Big Ten Freshman Of The Week Award

Ohio State football quarterback Tate Martell

Tate Martell turned in a record-breaking performance against Rutgers. Monday, that was enough to earn him a share of the Big Ten’s Freshman Of The Week honors.

Martell went 10-for-10 passing, which set a new Ohio State record for highest completion percentage for a quarterback with 10 or more attempts.

Martell finished the day with 121 yards passing and one touchdown.

He added another 95 yards on the ground on just eight carries. The highlight was a 47-yard scramble for the Buckeyes’ final touchdown. You can watch a highlight of that play below.

Martell is the first Buckeye to win the league’s Freshman of the Week award since running back J.K. Dobbins claimed it for a 172-yard performance with two touchdowns against Army in 2017.

Another player with a name familiar to Buckeye fans took home Big Ten Player of the Week honors this week as well.

Antoine Winfield, Jr. was the Defensive Player of the Week after making a game-clinching interception in Minnesota’s win over Fresno State.
