NCAA Releases APR Report, Buckeye Football Second Highest In B1G

Ohio State Buckeyes football head coach Ryan Day

The NCAA has released the latest Academic Progress Reports for all sports and Buckeye football has done very well in the latest measurements.

The Ohio State football program produced a 997 APR score for the 2017-2018 academic year, and a 987 multi-year mark, which is only behind Northwestern’s 996 score in the Big Ten over that span.

OSU football had the 12th-highest mark among FBS programs and 28th among all Division I football programs.

The Buckeye basketball program, however, scored a multi-year mark of 940, which is 10 points above the punitive threshold.

The multi-year score incorporates the 2014-2015, 2015-2016, 2016-2017, and 2017-2018 academic years, and the Buckeye basketball program is still affected by the departure of the entire 2015 recruiting class, as well as the attrition that has surrounded the coaching change from Thad Matta to Chris Holtmann.

OSU basketball’s 2017-2018 APR was 981, which is a more accurate picture of Holtmann’s program, and up from a 922 mark for the 2016-2017 calendar.

For the second year in a row, Ohio State basketball had the lowest APR score in the Big Ten, though it has gone up four points from last season.

If you would like a refresher on what the APR is and how it is measured, here’s the definition from NCAA.com.

The APR, or Academic Progress Rate, holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete for each academic term.

The APR is calculated as follows:

Teams must earn a four-year average APR of 930 to compete in championships.
