Buckeye Weekly Podcast — It’s Linebacker Armageddon Time!

Buckeye Weekly Ohio State Football Buckeyes Podcast

In this episode of the Buckeye Weekly podcast, Tony Gerdeman and Tom Orr discuss the Ohio State linebackers. In particular, how much Greg Mattison likes his linebackers right now. Will Buckeye fans be as happy? Not all of them, that’s for sure. Ryan Day also spoke with reporters on Wednesday and let us know who the starting quarterback is going to be. Sort of. All of this and much, much more, including listener questions.

The Rundown

Ryan Day will name a starting quarterback on Monday, but that’s not important right now.

 How is Tom doing?

Better than a certain segment of Buckeye fans right now.

We know a lot more about the linebackers now.

 All is well!

This is how The Purge started.

 Greg Mattison loves Pete Werner.

 Greg Mattison loves Tuf Borland.

He had nothing but good things to say about both of them.

This was not well received on Twitter.

Goes back to what we’ve said all along, don’t judge the players too harshly based on last year’s performance.

Look at who is gone from last year and that will tell you where the issues were.

Peter Werner and Tuf Borland are back, Greg Schiano and Bill Davis are not.

With talented teams like this, you tell them “Go.”

You don’t invent things for them to do, according to Greg Mattison.

The linebacker depth chart isn’t set, but you’ll see Tuf and Pet and Malik Harrison out there in the base set.

But more than just those three will be playing.

This is a versatile group of linebackers and Mattison has more depth than he ever did at Michigan.

 The danger of our mudhole.

This may have been the most optimistic press conference we’ve ever seen.

 Mattison wants three first-teams.

And he wants them running to the ball.

That didn’t always happen last year.

They have probably two groups of starters at linebacker.

How much of the Bullet will we see this year?

 Does Mattison even know?

A lot of moving parts, but those parts are being asked to do fewer things.

 A more logical defense.

The entire coaching staff has listened to the podcast.

 It’s Time For Orr!

 We’re pretty smrt.

Ryan Day is set to name a starter on Monday.

 Who will it be?

We don’t know, but he sure talked about Justin Fields a lot.

Gunnar Hoak still has a black stripe on his helmet.

Justin Fields has had a great week of practice.

He is anticipating his throws better and leading well.

This was the most effusive Ryan Day has been in his praising of Fields.

Ryan Day still ain’t thrilled with the lack of a backup running back.

What will it take for somebody to win that job.

 Be like Terry.

Talking about the wide receiver depth chart.

 Garrett Wilson as an X.

 We never thought about that.

We have talked about playing time coming down to who is better between Garrett Wilson and Jaylen Harris, we just didn’t think they would be playing the same position.

The Buckeyes are still going to rotate at least 6 receivers.

OSU has very different players encompassing each individual receiver position.

It’s like changing speeds for a pitcher.

Cornerbacks won’t be able to get comfortable when they are facing different types of receivers.

Tony thinks the offense will be good.

Tom thinks the defense will be good.

 Tony likes the special teams.

This is the time for optimism.

 Listener questions.

Worst ESPN College Gameday location: Times Square or Disney World.

Alabama’s home and home schedule has long been a joke.

Any fear that Thayer Munford and Austin Mack not being ready to go this season.

What’s the defensive line rotation looking like?

 Yes, we are on Spotify.

Who are the five fastest Buckeyes on the team?

Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave will combine for more yards than Austin Mack and Ben Victor?

Which Buckeye would be the best Arby’s spokesperson?
