For the fourth time in just four days, a member of Ohio State’s 2019 recruiting class has lost his black stripe.
Thursday it was freshman safety Bryson Shaw. He is now the eighth true freshman to lose his black stripe this year.
The tradition signifies a new player having done enough on and off the field to earn an official spot on the OSU football team.
Previously, wide receiver Garrett Wilson, defensive end Zach Harrison, wide receiver Jameson Williams, offensive linemen Harry Miller and Ryan Jacoby, running back Marcus Crowley, and linebacker Cade Stover lost their black stripes.
Stover, Shaw, Miller, and Williams are the only freshmen who enrolled this summer to lose their stripes.
However, unlike those other players, Shaw’s black stripe removal involved a magician. You can see it in the video below.
Shaw might not have a future as a magician, but things are looking up for him with the football program.
Losing your black stripe early doesn’t guarantee future stardom, but history has shown that it’s a pretty good indication that a player has a bright future in Columbus.
You can watch the video announcing Shaw’s black stripe removal below.
