COLUMBUS — Ohio State kicked off fall camp today and the media was permitted to watch for 30 minutes. Most of that time was spent stretching — by the players, not the reporters.
There wasn’t a lot to take in, but there were some noteworthy items.
Most importantly, junior running back Demario McCall was practicing today at both running back and punt returner. In fact, he caught the first punt of fall practice. Joining McCall as punt returners were redshirt freshman H-back Jaelen Gill, and fifth-year H-backs KJ Hill and CJ Saunders.
Reporters were shuffled out before any semblance of a pecking order could be found among the position groups, and most of them were too far away to put things together anyway.
Depth charts can sometimes be divined by the order in which players are lined up for individual drills. Currently, former Rutgers offensive lineman Jonah Jackson was the seventh linemen in the first drill of the season.
Junior left tackle Thayer Munford was back practicing after missing the spring with a back injury.
The only other notable bits of information are that freshman wide receiver Jameson Williams was jogging around the field, indicating some type of minor injury. Other players still dealing with injury included senior linebacker Justin Hilliard, true freshman safety Ronnie Hickman, and redshirt freshman receiver Kamryn Babb.
Buckeyes’ head coach Ryan Day will meet with the media following practice, as will a handful of assorted players.
The next availability for the media will be on Sunday following practice. Quarterbacks coach Mike Yurcich will meet with reporters, as will his quarterbacks. Special teams coordinator Matt Barnes and the OSU specialists will also be made available.
Monday is hotel check-in day for the Buckeyes, which is everyone’s favorite photo day.
On Tuesday, media will be permitted to watch the entire morning practice. The Big Ten Network will also be on hand.
