The-Ozone Fall Practice Insider: Justin Fields Still Out Front

Justin Fields, Chris Chugunov Ohio State Buckeyes Practice

COLUMBUS — The Ohio State football team was back on the field for practice No. 11 on Wednesday. Media was permitted to watch the first six periods of the action.

The early portions again included stretching, jogging, and punt team work.

Not much more could be gleaned than what we’ve already covered here, but I’ll empty my notebook anyway.

This won’t take long.

Freshman safety Ronnie Hickman, redshirt freshman receiver Kamryn Babb, and fifth-year linebacker Justin Hilliard were still off on their own dealing with injuries.

Senior receiver Austin Mack was also working on his own, running and cutting on a side field. Ryan Day last week said he’s about a week away from returning from an undisclosed injury.

The punt returners remain CJ Saunders, KJ Hill, Jaelen Gill, Demario McCall, and Garrett Wilson.

The first defensive drill that I saw featured linebackers Malik Harrison, Tuf Borland, and Pete Werner. Later drills also featured this trio. Junior Baron Browning was with the twos during some portions.

Jashon Cornell and Davon Hamilton continue to rep first among the defensive tackles.

The order of the free safeties was Jordan Fuller, Isaiah Pryor, Josh Proctor, and Marcus Hooker.

The strong safeties were again repping with the cornerbacks. I didn’t see redshirt freshman Tyreke Johnson on the field today.

Freshman linebacker Craig Young looks like he is putting on weight and does not resemble his listed measurements of 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds. He moves well and is getting bigger and stronger.

The quarterbacks remain unchanged. Sophomore Justin Fields is still out in front, going first in every drill that we have seen. He has been followed by graduate senior Chris Chugunov and then junior transfer Gunnar Hoak.

It’s not a lot of info and drawing conclusions from bits and pieces of smidges of a viewing isn’t ideal or recommended.
