5 Incredible Facts From The Buckeyes’ First Half At Nebraska

The last time Ohio State came to Lincoln, Urban Meyer’s 2017 team absolutely stomped Mike Riley’s final squad into the dirt.

The score was 35-0 at halftime, and it ended 56-14. It was a shocking liquification of a once-proud Cornhuskers program in front of a stunned crowd.

Saturday night, the Buckeyes returned to Memorial Stadium to face Scott Frost’s second team. The Huskers are clearly on the upswing, and their on-field talent has improved.

Somehow, this year’s first half may have been even worse.

Ohio State raced out to a 38-0 lead in the first 30 minutes. But the stats tell an even more remarkable story. Here are five numbers to know from the first half of the game.

8.4

The Buckeyes averaged 8.4 yards per play for the half. Reminder: You only need 10 to pick up a first down, so the average OSU play would have left them with a 2nd-and-2.

Nebraska’s average play went for 2.7 yards.

2, 3

Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez completed two passes to his teammates in the first half, finishing 2-for-8 for 10 yards.

He completed three passes to Buckeyes, including a pair of interceptions for Jeff Okudah and one for Jordan Fuller.

224-9

The Buckeyes outgained Nebraska 224-9 in the second quarter of the game.

The Huskers ran 11 plays in the quarter, compared to 27 for Ohio State.

6.7, 9.0, 10.0

Only three Buckeyes touched the ball in the run game in the first half. J.K. Dobbins averaged 6.7 yards per carry (17 carries, 114 yards), a remarkable number. His was the worst of the three.

Master Teague averaged 9.0 yards per carry (4-36). Justin Fields averaged 10.0 (8-80).

7-for-8

Ohio State went 7-for-8 converting third downs in the first half.

The only one they didn’t convert came at the end of a 13-play, 90-yard drive and ended with a 23-yard Blake Haubeil field goal.
