Ohio State Postgame: Ryan Day, Justin Fields Talk 76-5 Win Over Miami

Ryan Day Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS — Following Ohio State’s 76-5 win over the Miami RedHawks, Buckeyes’ head coach Ryan Day and quarterback Justin Fields spoke with reporters. They answered questions about the offensive explosion Ohio State showed on Saturday as well as plenty of other items of note. Here are all of the highlights of what they had to say.

Ryan Day

+  Felt great to run out of the tunnel to see the packed house again. Great to see the student section stick around through the rain

+ The first five or six minutes weren’t great, but from then on it was pretty dominant overall.

+ The offense and defense was opportunistic today and that was good. There is a lot to clean up if they are going to win in Lincoln next week.

+ Miami hit them with some wide pitches and they’ll have to clean that up.

+ Garrett Wilson and Jameson Williams have practiced well and it was good to see them perform today.

+ Nebraska is a big challenge for the team. They haven’t really looked at them yet because they are taking one game at a time. They have already moved on to Nebraska. They will reward the guys who played like champions today, but they will quickly move on.

+ The key to good coaching is being able to move in and out of schemes and personnel packages and have the kind of variety that can take advantage of any opponent.

+ They have to make sure they continue to look at how other teams will attack them.

+ The safety was a post corner, which takes some time to develop. It was a risky call on his part. JK Dobbins got beat a little bit on the Sam blitz. Probably not a great play call, but Dobbins needs to do a better job. That wasn’t on Fields.

+ With games like this, they want to maintain a standard. It also allows them to create depth and build some strength. Today was a good day to get young guys in.

+ Chris Chugunov took a step forward in this game. Gunnar Hoak did a nice job as well. “We’re not here just to run out the game.” There was some good film that came from this game for those two.

+ Garrett Wilson’s touchdown was underthrown a little bit, but it was just unbelievable talent. That was pretty unreal.

+ Tempo is only good if you get the first first down.

Justin Fields

+ The second quarter was a good stretch. Not sure if it was the best stretch of the season for the Buckeye offense.

+ Day is always telling them that they’re eventually going to be punched in the face and it depends on how they respond.

+ He wasn’t worried after his strip sack for the safety.

+ Fields thinks they’ve prepared well for the season and for Nebraska next week. They’ll continue to get ready.

+ The touchdown throw to Binjimen Victor was his favorite throw of the day. Victor is an all-around receiver. He’s physical and has great hands. “He’s a great receiver.”

+ He’s fine if they want to open the offense up next week and moving forward.

+ Fields knew Jameson Williams was going to score on his catch because nobody was going to catch him. Garrett Wilson has made better catches in practice than the touchdown he had today.

+ His ability to keep the ball on the reads in the red zone really helps this offense. It opens the offense a good bit.

+ The backup QBs do a great job in the film room, so he doesn’t have to coach them up at all when they’re in. The other second teamers, however, he tries to help them whenever they need it.
