Big Ten Suspends Spring Football, All Other Organized Team Activities

Ohio Stadium Spring Game Crowd 2019 Ohio State Spring Game

The Big Ten announced on Friday that in addition to the cancellation of athletic competitions through the end of the academic year, they have also suspended all organized team activities until at least April 6, 2020.

Here is the statement in full.

The Big Ten Conference announced today that all organized team activities have been suspended until April 6, 2020 and will be re-evaluated at that time.

The Big Ten has previously announced that in addition to canceling the Men’s Basketball Tournament it will be canceling all conference and non-conference competitions through the end of the academic year, including spring sports that compete beyond the academic year, and participation in all NCAA tournaments and competitions. The Conference also has announced a moratorium on all on- and off-campus recruiting activities for the foreseeable future.

The Big Ten Conference will use this time to work with the appropriate medical experts and institutional leadership to determine next steps for moving forward in regard to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The main priority of the Big Ten Conference continues to be the health, safety and wellness of our student-athletes, coaches, administrators, fans and media as we continue to monitor all developing and relevant information on the COVID-19 virus.

This effectively ends spring football for Ohio State, as the Buckeyes were scheduled to play their spring game on April 11. That game was canceled earlier in the week.

Ohio State is expected to release on update on where things stand regarding spring football and offseason workouts later today.

Yesterday, the University extended spring break an extra week through Sunday, March 22, at which time “virtual learning” will be instituted for the remainder of the semester. In addition, students have been ordered to move out of their residence halls.

With the removal of students from university housing, it would follow that the removal of student-athletes from workout facilities would occur as well.

That update, however, is still to come.

Here is Thursday’s letter from OSU President Michael Drake detailing the latest updates around the Ohio State campus.

The Ohio State University announced new information for students, faculty and staff in response to the international viral outbreak of 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The university launched a website with information about the coronavirus as well as an email account where general questions about the coronavirus can be directed: coronavirus@osumc.edu

President Michael V. Drake issued a new university-wide letter on Thursday that updates university guidelines. The details are as follows:

Dear Members of the Ohio State Community:

Thank you for your cooperation and collaboration related to the coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19). The university remains committed to the health and well-being of our community. Though there have been no confirmed cases at Ohio State, every step we take as a university is aimed at reducing any potential spread of the virus and ensuring the continuation of our academic mission.

We have a large student population and global reach that require us to manage this issue while taking a variety of circumstances into consideration.

Below are several steps the university is taking today following consultation with experts within our university community, and continually evolving guidance from city, state and federal officials.

We are suspending face-to-face classes and transitioning to virtual learning for the remainder of the semester — and will be facilitating a scheduled and orderly process for students to move out of the residence halls. To aid this process, we are extending spring break by one week through Sunday, March 22. Finally, we are sharing new reporting and quarantine restrictions related to travel.

Once again, there will be additional communications as we learn more. Please check our website for all updates and additional information. You can also address your questions to coronavirus@osumc.edu.

These are extraordinary times. I am gratified by the flexibility and spirit of cooperation we have experienced from our students, faculty, staff and parents. We are all in this together, doing our very best to keep our students and community safe while continuing to support their academic progress. Thank you all very much.

Sincerely,

Michael V. Drake, MD

President
