In his first career start, Dwayne Haskins set an Ohio State record for both passing yards and passing touchdowns in a starting debut.
Monday, he was named the Big Ten Player of the Week for that performance.
Haskins threw for 313 yards and five touchdowns in the Buckeyes’ 77-31 win over Oregon State.
Saturday, acting head coach Ryan Day gave Haskins a strong grade for his performance, outside of one interception.
“I thought Dwayne started well, played well, had the one play there that obviously you’d like to have back. But overall a good start,” Day said.
Former OSU quarterback J.T. Barrett won the same honor in week one of the 2017 season.
Other players honored by the Big Ten this week included Co-Defensive Players of the Week, Illinois LB Jake Hasen and Maryland DB Antoine Brooks, Jr.
A familiar name won a share of the Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Minnesota DB Antoine Winfield, Jr. was chosen for his punt return touchdown, along with Michigan DB Ambry Thomas.
Maryland WR Jeshaun Jones and Purdue WR Rondale Moore were named co-Freshmen of the Week.
Unsurprisingly, Haskins was also one of the Buckeyes whose performance was designated as a champion by the OSU program.
However, while Haskins won the Big Ten’s Offensive Player of the Week, he didn’t win that honor for the Buckeye program. That went to running back Mike Weber and WR Terry McLaurin.
DE Nick Bosa was the Buckeyes’ Defensive Player of the Week.
Other champions included wide receivers K.J. Hill, Parris Campbell, and Austin Mack, running back J.K. Dobbins, and all five starting offensive linemen: Isaiah Prince, Demetrius Knox, Michael Jordan, Thayer Munford, and Malcolm Pridgeon.
DT Dre’Mont Jones was the only other player on defense designated as a Champion.
