2019 Quarterback JP Andrade Commits to Ohio State

Ohio State football recruiting J.P. Andrade

JP Andrade, a 3-star 2019 quarterback prospect from California, has committed to Ohio State.

That’s a position of serious need in Columbus right now, following the news that Matthew Baldwin had put his name in the Transfer Portal.

Right now the Buckeyes have only sophomore Justin Fields and grad transfer senior Chris Chugunov on scholarship for this fall.

Andrade would provide some valuable depth, both this year and into the future. He will begin his career as a preferred walk-on, which means he is guaranteed a spot on this year’s team.

He is ranked as the 57th-best pro-style quarterback in the class.

At 6-foot-3 and 200 lbs., he already has good size for a college quarterback.

Playing for Bonita High School, just east of Pasadena, Andrade has rewritten his school’s record books.

He threw for 4,366 yards and 38 touchdowns as a senior against just nine interceptions, and averaged 336 yards per game.

Bonita went 9-4 on the year and reached the third round of the California state playoffs.

Andrade was named 1st-team all-state by Maxpreps, Player of the Year in the San Gabriel Valley, and the offensive MVP of the Palomares League.

He also played in the World Bowl game, an all-star game hosted by the Pro Football Hall of Fame Academy.

He holds an FCS offer from South Alabama, and was also offered a chance to be a preferred walk-on at Florida.

Andrade has visited Columbus twice this year, including for the OSU Spring Game.

His highlight reel (below) showcases some nice touch on throws downfield, and ability to throw on the move.

He also runs some read option, which is another benefit to a player who could join the Buckeyes.

Andrade will unquestionably be something of a developmental project for a year or two.

But short-term he provides some critically-needed depth, and some potential long-term stability.
