J.T. Barrett Named B1G Player of Week Despite Six Incompletions

Fall Classic Earns J.T. Barrett Big Ten Player of the Week Award

He was 13-for-13 for 170 yards and three TDs in 4th Qtr. against No. 1 scoring/No. 7 pass defense

 COLUMBUS, Ohio – J.T. Barrett is the Big Ten Conference offensive player of the week after his near perfect, “fall classic” effort in Ohio State’s thrilling come-from-behind, 39-38, victory over No. 2 Penn State Saturday at Ohio Stadium.

Ohio State overcame two 18-point deficits and came from 15 points down in the final 5:42 to claim the victory. It was a team effort as Barrett, sure-handed receivers and outstanding offensive line play led the offense coupled with a “rushmen” led Ohio State defense that limited Saquan Barkley to minus-3 yards in the second half.

Barrett completed 33 of 39 passes for 328 yards and four touchdowns, plus rushed for 95 yards for an Ohio State school record 423 yards of total offense. He completed his final 16 passes to set the school record for consecutive completions, including completing 13 of 13 passes in the fourth quarter alone for 170 yards and three touchdowns.

“I’ve never had a kid play perfect, but damn he was close tonight,” Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said following the game.

Barrett connected with Johnnie Dixon on a 10-yard TD pass with 4:20 to play to bring Ohio State to within 5 points, at 38-33. Then after Ohio State’s defense held, he lead a 5-play, 58-yard drive that was capped by a Barrett to Marcus Baugh TD pass of 16 yards for a 39-38 lead that proved to be enough as the Buckeye defense then held Penn State on four downs.

This is the ninth Big Ten player of the week award for Barrett and it ties him with Wisconsin’s Ron Dayne and Michigan’s Denard Robinson for the most awards in Big Ten history.

Barrett, who is completing 69.5 percent of his passes this season with 25 touchdown passes and just one interception, and the Buckeyes are now 7-1 on the season and head to Iowa for a key Big Ten game Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET with ESPN televising.

  4. I’ve been a critic of Barrett’s ability to throw the long ball and to be accurate. He showed me that he has worked on these problems and has all but eliminated them. This is one of the best performances by a QB that I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been watching football since the 50’s. Way to go JT, you proved what a champion you really are. God bless.

    I agree with your sentiments that it will be a challenge for the Buckeyes to come out sharp in Kinnick Stadium. I was under the impression however that Iowa was having great trouble running the ball this season and that they were a pass-heavy team this year.

    With this in mind I’m hoping our back 7 will come to play, they might be challenged the most

  7. A friend of mine said of J.T. on Friday “you know he will never start on Sundays”. I said not only will he start on Sundays, “he will coach on Sundays”! A true student of the game. Hiesmans’ are won on the field on Saturdays. J.T. is on his way!

  11. Classic let down situation coming up!!! Not predicting one but it happens WAAAAAY more than not.

    1. I kind of feel that way too. I can easily see a flat Buckeye team coming out after such an emotional game. I mean guys were crying at the end. They laid it all out there on the field. I wouldn’t blame them at all.

      Iowa, despite their record, isn’t a terrible team. Their offense is not a big play offense. They are a run heavy team. Their QB is probably the reason why as he doesn’t appear very good. Their best WR disappears in big games. Their defense is pretty stingy. When you examine their win loss record more closely they are only a play away from flipping three of those losses to wins. It took PSU the last play of the game to avoid a loss to these guys.

      I don’t think they will lose but the game may not reflect the PSU games effert.

  12. Very well deserved. On this stage it should vault him near the top of the Heisman List as well. Should OSU wish to attain their lofty goals, OSU will need him to receive this award or be near the top during our four final weeks of play.

  13. Well-deserved! Hope J.T. wins at least one more Big Ten Player of the Week award so he’ll have yet another record all to himself.
