Ohio State Board of Trustees Heads Into Executive Session

Ohio State Football Buckeyes Public Session

The Ohio State Board of Trustees met briefly in public this morning prior to their scheduled private executive session regarding Ohio State football head coach Urban Meyer.

The meeting essentially started with a roll call and then immediately recessed to an executive session “to discuss personnel matters regarding the employment, compensation and discipline of public officials.”

On Monday, the board was updated with the findings of the investigative group charged with finding out what Meyer knew, when he knew it, and what he did with the information he received about the allegations of domestic violence against former wide receivers coach Zach Smith.

After mulling over all of that information on Tuesday, the trustees will now go over those findings among each other this morning and discuss what actions they believe should be taken.

They will then present their findings and recommendation to Ohio State University president Michael Drake, who will then make a decision following “appropriate time for consideration.”

Drake’s decision could come as early as Wednesday, depending on what he deems appropriate time for consideration.

  1. @Christopher…I agree that much of what has gone on could have been done more discreatly….some by law needed to be announced….but why put a timeline on the investigation etc…sppn this will be over…are you ready for some football!

    1. Our Administration is now just as complicit as the national media we complain of in making a spectacle of this situation, making it more grand than it had to be, and shining a huge spotlight on the entire thing. Worst leadership imaginable. They have no clue on P.R. And crisis control. Add to that they don’t have the guts to act irrespective of the P.C. crowd and Mobb and you have a good man (Urban) being unnecessarily dragged through the mud…when it could have just been a dust up.

  2. If they fire Urban, Jim Tressel is available. The 5 year show cause is over by now. Either way Meatchicken fans won’t like it.

  3. If/when Meyer is retained, and especially if there is no suspension, the scrutiny from the media and other programs will be intense. I will gladly accept all of the frustration of this “process” if it means that they left no stone unturned, no witness non-interviewed, no police report unread.
I hope there is a 200 -page, triple redundant defense of Meyer and the program, leaving no doubt that this was an issue outside of the football program.

  4. You all are forgetting that there are lawyers involved in this matter. They learn in law school that the meter is running as long as the case is open. Wouldn’t want to wrap this up too soon; bad for the bottom line.

  5. Meyer will serve out his current contract with OSU then sign a New one with Notre Dame. He will coach there for 10 years & win 4 National titles. He will enter the College Hall of Fame as a Fighting Irish Man. His best coaching days are ahead of him. Will turn out to be the “Best ” college Football coach ever!!

    1. Wrong, He will coach another 10-15 years at Ohio State, and then retire. HE already has his dream job bud.

  6. If the board is supposed to be discussing the investigation today and making their final recommendations/decisions, then why the heck is there a picture of Urban sneaking in through the back door of the building today obviously going into the meeting? Seems strange to have him there while they are deliberating his fate unless of course a decision has already been made and they are informing him?

  7. This just in…the OSU Board of Trustees has voted unanimously to retain Jim Harbaugh as head coach of the Michigan Wolverines Football program. The streak will continue. Gold pants for everyone.

  8. At least this is not as long and drawn out as the Mueller investigation.

  9. The theatrics are really over the top here… a much more streamlined approach that put this to bed in short order would have been far more effective in this scenario. Dragging this out and having all of these announced dates (investigation end date, meeting date, decision date, etc.) and drawing even more media attention and publicity to this makes no sense. OSU is complicit in building up the anticipation for the decision…which will put it even under a brighter microscope…which will make naysayers even louder whatever they decide. There was no upside to this approach. None whatsoever. MSU handled the recent Izzo/Dantonio situations beautifully.

As a two time OSU Alum, the lack of sophistication and leadership is embarrassing.

    1. @Christopher….while this may seem over the top it may not have been. We don’t know the extent of their findings as yet. According to reports Urban was interviewed four times…..why did it take interviewing him four times to discover what he knew, when he knew it, and what steps were taken? Did they also interview Gene Smith? If Urban reported the situation to him what course of action, if any, did he take? The one side of this investigation that is positive is that no one can say….they swept it under the rug….maybe the bigger question for us Alumni and fans alike….how much of the investigation will be revealed to us?

      1. I get what you’re saying but even with all that there was no need to 1. Announce 14 day time schedule, 2. Announce investigation completion, 3. Announce meeting date, 4. Announce decision date. None of that had to be broadcast. Play it close to the vest and just go about your business in a workmanlike manner. All of the broadcasting and announcements only adds to the hype! Hype is what you don’t want. So I guess what I am saying is the substance of what they did may have been necessary and fine, but the manner in which they did it was counterproductive. And it was all to try to appease a media and mobb (that they will never make happy anyway).

        1. Christopher spot on, but this is more than just making the Mob and Media happy. Higher education institutions now realize that The Brown Shirts of PC, actual carry some clout.
