The university in Bloomington known today as Indiana University was established on January 20, 1820, as the “State Seminary.”

IU graduated its first class in 1830. Indiana began its athletic program in 1867 by fielding their first baseball team, and joined the Big Ten Conference on December 1, 1899. Along with fielding 24 varsity teams, various IU teams have won 24 NCAA National Championships. This includes 8 in Men’s Soccer, 6 in Men’s Swimming, 5 in Men’s Basketball, 3 in Men’s Cross Country, and 1 each in Men’s Outdoor Track & Field and Wrestling. The IU women also won 1 AIAW National Championship in Tennis.

The Indiana Hoosiers Football Team has a current all-time record of 479–672–44 since beginning play in 1887. They have won 2 Big Ten Conference Championships, and hold a 3-8 all-time bowl record.

Here are the B1G Things to Know, Indiana Edition:

  1. With its victory last weekend at Rutgers, IU picked up its first conference road opening win since 2007 at Iowa and moved to 4-1 on the season.

  3. Indiana head coach Tom Allen enters Saturday’s match-up with the Buckeyes with a career record of 9-9. Saturday will be the 31st game Allen has coached for IU, either as a defensive coordinator or head coach, since originally being hired by Wilson.
