Playoff Field Set: No. 2 Ohio State vs. No. 3 Clemson In Fiesta

Clemson Ohio State College Football Playoff

The Big Ten champion Ohio State Buckeyes now know where they will continue their chase for the national title.

Sunday, the College Football Playoff committee gave the Buckeyes the No. 2 seed.

OSU will face No. 3 Clemson in the 2019 Fiesta Bowl.

The game will be played Sunday, December 28 in Glendale, Ariz.

The Buckeyes opened as a 1-point favorite.

Ohio State earned its spot with a perfect 13-0 record and their third consecutive outright Big Ten championship. They beat Wisconsin, 34-21 in Indianapolis on Saturday night.

Clemson also finished 13-0, as the ACC champion. The Tigers destroyed Virginia, 62-17 to win that title.

This will be the fourth meeting between the Buckeyes and Tigers in the schools’ history. Clemson has won each of the previous three meetings, including the 1978 Gator Bowl, the 2014 Orange Bowl, and the 2016 Fiesta Bowl.

No. 1 LSU and No. 4 Oklahoma will face off in the Peach Bowl in the other semifinal.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day and a handful of Buckeyes will hold a press conference shortly to discuss the news.

  1. Let’s see – last 5 years No. 1/3 seed (NO RINGS) No. 2/4 seed (FIVE Rings – including the good guys). Let’s get a grip folks, we’re the number one team in the nation – as Coach Day and anyone with common sense would know doesn’t really matter your seeding – now to be honest if we had to go in the middle of SEC/ACC Country to play I’d be a little disheartened – but going to the desert is truly a neutral site in my opinion – so let’s see how much we’ve improved since the last time we played those guys. And btw – have we ever beaten a Clemson team? Next point – who really cares about S – PINS bias? It didn’t matter in 14 or 16 – we were the best team one year, and not so much the next year. Are there two SEC teams in the dance? So, the recency bias is now. While I’m rambling – the year after the Natty the Buckeyes were unanimous preseason number one and got to those Green dudes up north and laid an egg – that was the beginning of the end of the Zone Read as a go to offense and it had nothing to do with recency bias – they ran JT Barrett a billion times and as Zeke put it “Didn’t give us a chance to win” – Go Bucks!

  2. Lots of commenters are taking the high road/ “bring em on” stance, which is fine and, frankly, which OSU itself has no choice but to do. However, it is worth observing that this committee turned out even worse than previous ones. Previous committees didn’t even bother hiding SEC bias. This one was a snake in the grass, saying all the right things in weeks prior and then…BOOM, Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie Brown when it got down to being real. There is no useful comparative metric between LSU and OSU which favors LSU as the 1- NONE. The 1 seed is a gigantic advantage as LSU gets to put up basketball numbers against OK, while OSU and Clem are involved in a much tougher battle. Then LSU gets the icing on the cake for…guess what…a HOME STATE title game. Sound familiar? Ridiculous. The SEC boot licking continues, nice job committee- way to abandon your standards when it mattered most.

    1. True that. That said, it was also pretty obvious by the way the committee phrased it that they were going to do what they did for weeks. LSU’s D has never been ‘close’ all year. LSU’s resume has never been ‘superior’ all year. The numbers don’t lie. When they installed Gawja at #4 we (myself included as I tried to talk myself into believing this year would be different) were done. Gawja’s RB was out, as was their #1 receiver and their #2 had to sit out the 1st half. Even when they were there Gawja never had an offense worth a da** yet this is ‘proof’ of LSU having a defense?

    2. OSU jumped LSU because the commitee believed OSU defense was much better with Chase Young destroying everyone.
two things happened since. Michigan and Wisconsin neutralized Chase Young and did not compromise they offensive output too much by doing so.
LSU defense has looked better, got some people healthy, although A&M and Georgia not the best majoring sticks. but still the struggles of Ohio State in the last 3 games made the gap between the two defenses fuzzy while LSU has the much better QB at this stage and more consistent offense with OSU line looking very porous on occasions. Had we scored two more TDs Saturday instead of Field Goals, who knows what the decision would have been.

  3. The defacto National Title game is Clemson vs Ohio State. The reason is obvious. LSU and OU have 2 of the shittiest defenses for top 10 teams in the last 20 years.

Beat Clumpson and the National title returns to Columbus.

  4. Ohio State was doomed even before the championship games were played. Georgia was touted so highly compared to Wisconsin that there was no way for OSU to maintain the top spot unless they put up a ridiculous score like 59-0 on the Badgers. Had LSU got down by two scores in the first half against the Bulldogs and then come back to win by two scores, the Tigers would be heralded for overcoming diversity against such a tough opponent. But when Ohio State does this it’s looked at as a deficiency. Georgia is a fraud. Wisconsin would beat them silly. No win situation for the Buckeyes or the B1G. SEC bias at it’s finest.

  5. Tom will love this one: The streak of Playoff #1s NOT winning the title will continue! ROFLMAO!

  6. I can just imagine the angst of some among the Buckeye faithful for OSU dropping to #2 in the final CFP rankings. I’m good with it. Here’s why:
in 2014, the Buckeyes were #4 and beat #1 Alabama in the semis.
they would probably have to play Clemson anyway, so this gives them an extra week to prepare. What difference does it make when they play?
this gives the Bucks a bit of an edge leading into the CFP, being snubbed. They play better with a chip on their shoulders, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re underdogs to Clemson.
    GO BUCKS!

  7. Heck I’m excited and pumped! I was wishing to play Clemson. Payback in a big way then earn number 1 by beating Lsu. Course it would funny if Okie beats Lsu.

  8. Disappointed, but not in the least surprised. Gonna have to earn the respect automatically (and wrongfully) given the $EC by beating Clemson along the way. 2014 path all over again.

  9. It is what it is! I’m not surprised. There’s a “Recency” bias on top of an already existing SEC bias, so staying #1 was going to be a long shot! Let’s just hope that the national media doesn’t give us a shot!

  10. Another 1st 1/2 like last night another 31-0 beating, I was saving Vacation time to go to CG, not now!
