Buckeyes Add Texas A&M Transfer Quarterback Jagger LaRoe

Ohio State football quarterback Jagger LaRoe

Texas A&M quarterback Jagger LaRoe announced Sunday night that he was transferring to play at Ohio State for the 2019 season.

“It’s my privilege to join a team and program with the richest heritage in college football, THE Ohio State University Buckeyes,” LaRoe wrote.

LaRoe is a 6-foot-3, 216 lb quarterback from Colleyville, Texas.

In his senior year at Heritage High School, LaRoe completed 69.4 percent of his passes for 3,029 yards and 33 touchdowns against just five interceptions.

He spent his freshman season as a preferred walk-on with the Aggies and did not see any game action.

He went 3-for-5 for 29 yards in A&M’s 2019 Spring Game.

LaRoe is just the latest arrival in an almost-total remaking of the Buckeyes’ quarterback room for 2019.

Grad transfer Chris Chugunov and walk-on Danny Vanatsky are the only quarterbacks still with the team from the 2019 Rose Bowl game.

Since then, Dwayne Haskins left for the NFL, and backups Tate Martell, Matthew Baldwin, and walk-on Kory Curtis all transferred.

Ryan Day has filled those holes by adding transfer Justin Fields, grad transfer Gunnar Hoak, walk-on freshman J.P. Andrade, and now LaRoe.

If you want to get a better sense for what Jagger’s moves are like, you can watch his high school highlight reel below.

LaRoe shows good touch on some deep balls, and also hits open receivers in stride down the field.

He’s not likely to play a significant role in this year’s Buckeye team, but provides some much-needed depth in the short-term.

With four years of eligibility left, LaRoe also has a chance to establish himself as a veteran in the quarterback room before his career ends. In a unit where no one has been there for even a full calendar year at the moment, that stability would be welcome.

  1. “He’s got the moves like Jagger”…somebody had to say it. Can you imagine that tune playing in the ‘Shoe on a fall afternoon if the kid sees some playing time?

  2. I like the kid’s savvy. Jump in early and play the long game. Definitely has a QB’s smarts!

  3. How many yrs can Jagger LaRoe play for the Buckeyes. I take it that a student who comes via the transfer portal does not have to sit out a year? Thanks for any feedback.

  4. WHO is #1….. looks like a D1 receiver ………

  5. And just like that, in little over 3-4 monts, a BIG depth problem at QB appears solved. Coach Day is workin’ some magic!

  6. What a name- you can’t make up a better one!
