In 1993, the Buckeyes were 9-0-1, having tied Wisconsin. They headed to Ann Arbor to face a 6-4 Wolverine squad in that year’s episode of The Game. I was there. It was my first (and only) trip to the “Big House.” Like many other Ohio State fans that year, I was feeling good about our chances that afternoon. It was probably…
Ohio State and Michigan State squared off on a cold and windy day last Saturday. Michigan State featured the nation’s top rush defense, allowing 2.52 yards per carry. Only Penn State and the team up north had rushed for more than 100 yards against the Spartans this season. Coming into the weekend, the Spartan offense…
In what has been a recurring nightmare for the Buckeyes, there was an inability to convert their scoring chances into points. Of the six, two ended with a turnover, and one ended with a turnover on downs. This was a significant component to the outcome of this game. Converting those opportunities into points potentially…
I’m an optimist. I always try to find something good. When looking at the Purdue stats, it is almost impossible to find anything good to talk about. When looking at the numbers for this game the obvious place to start is the drive data. If you don’t score when you have the chance, you lose. A scoring chance is a possession…
Jim Tressel used to say things are never as good or as bad as they look. They are usually somewhere in between. In many respects, the same can be said for Ohio State’s efforts on both sides of the ball against Minnesota. Explosive Woes Continue. Each team had 10 possessions in this game and Minnesota was able to continually…
Like many, I found it frustrating to watch the Indiana game in real time. After the fact, the numbers can show whether those real time feelings were justified or maybe a bit overstated. In the case of playing the Hoosiers, it was a little of both. The job of your offense is to score. The job of your defense is to prevent a score.
Ohio State and Penn State played another instant classic last Saturday. The Buckeyes overcame their offensive struggles in the first half and mounted one of their better defensive performances to erase a two-touchdown deficit late in the fourth quarter. Here are some of the statistical highlights.
NEWBrutus is a long-time poster on our Legacy Forum and each week he crunches some numbers and shares them on the forum. From time to time, we will bump these posts to the Front Page and share them with everyone. In this particular piece, NEWBrutus looks at who is getting the ball most for the Buckeyes and which position groups…
The points allowed measure overshadows how good our defensive performance was on Saturday. Penn State had very limited success on offense. The Silver bullets did a masterful job on first and second down making it tough on the Lion offense. Of Penn State’s 15 third-down plays, 5 were 3rd and 4 or less. nine of Penn State’s third down…
Here is the Run/Pass Mix through the first half of the regular season. Please note: SACKS are included in the passing totals, as they are passing plays that went awry. Unfortunately there is no easy way to push quarterback scrambles for positive yards to the passing total without hand charting each play. This is all taken from the box scores and play-by-play data.
