The Big Ten had their annual spring coaches teleconference on Wednesday. Urban Meyer provided plenty of updates during his portion of the conversation. Here are the highlights.
The emphasis this spring on offense was 1) pass protection; 2) accuracy; and 3) finish.
The secondary is very strong right now. Junior college transfer Kendall Sheffield is ahead of the freshmen. He is in the rotation at cornerback right now. He is very impressed with the freshmen as well.
The 49ers told Meyer that the group of defensive backs leaving are some of the best guys they have ever talked to.
Defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones has gone from a good player to now bordering on being a great player. Damon Webb has gone from decent to very good this spring. “He’s one of the most improved players on our team.” Parris Campbell on the offensive side has been exception, so has Mike Weber. He’s been a lot like Damon Webb in taking another step.
Running back J.K. Dobbins will play this fall. “He’s had a very good spring.”
Demetrius Knox practiced today. He wasn’t available last Saturday due to some academics that needed to be cleared up.
Meyer is looking forward to seeing his guys perform in front of a crowd and see how they focus and not tighten up. For some guys, the crowd doesn’t matter. For others it does. This is for the young guys who haven’t done much. “I love it.”
He’s anxious to see the receivers and how they perform and who takes the next step to become great. The cornerbacks would be in that same group of who he is watching.
The offensive tackles have improved this spring. Billy Price will be solid. The right guard spot is still open. They aren’t where they need to be on the offensive line yet.
Outside of Ohio, Meyer keeps tabs on where they have had recruiting success. He can’t pick one state that is second to Ohio because of the successes they’ve had in places like Florida and Texas.
