This probably won’t be the last time Ohio State freshman running back J.K. Dobbins wins an award. Heck, it’s not the first time either. Following his season-opening performance against Indiana, Dobbins was named the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Week, and for his 13 carries and 172 yards rushing against Army on Saturday, he was once again doused with an accolade.
Dobbins is currently second in the Big Ten in rushing, averaging 141.7 yards rushing per game.
Here is the release from Ohio State.
J.K. Dobbins is Big Ten’s Co-Freshman of the Week
Second weekly award; has 425 yards rushing in first three games of the season
Ohio State true freshman J.K. Dobbins has been named the Big Ten Conference co-freshman of the week for his efforts in the Buckeyes 38-7 victory over Army this past Saturday. This is the second Big Ten freshman of the week award for Dobbins in the first three weeks of the season. He shared the award this week with Rutgers’ Johnathan Lewis.
Dobbins had a terrific afternoon running the ball against the Black Knights, rushing for 172 yards on just 13 carries for a 13,2 yards per carry average. Dobbins broke open a tight game in the third quarter on Ohio State’s first drive of the second half and leading 17-7. He rushed for a gain of 22 yards on the team’s first offensive play of the half and then went a personal-best 52-yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 24-7 and the Buckeyes never looked back. The touchdown was Dobbins’ second of the game.
Dobbins, who rushed for 181 yards in the season opener against Indiana, is 11th nationally in rushing with his 141.7 yards per game average. His 451 rushing yards rank eighth nationally.
Dobbins has joined Archie Griffin in 1972 and Maurice Clarett in 2002 as the only Ohio State freshmen to rush for at least 170 yards in a game twice.
Ohio State, 2-1 on the season and ranked No. 10 and No. 9 in the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls, respectively, are in Ohio Stadium again this week with a noon game Saturday against the UNLV Rebels. The Big Ten Network will be televising the contest.
