CB Denzel Ward a Finalist for the Thorpe Award
Currently ranks T13th nationally with 10 passes defended and 1.4 per game
COLUMBUS — One week after being named a midseason All-American, Ohio State junior cornerback Denzel Ward has been named a semifinalist for the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award, given annually to the top defensive back in college football.
Ward, from Macedonia, Ohio and Nordonia High School, ranks in a tie for 13th nationally – and tied for second in the Big Ten Conference – with 10 passes defended and with 1.4 passes defended per game. He has nine pass break-ups and one interception. He also has contributed 20 tackles, including 2.0 TFLs to the Buckeyes’ nationally ranked defensive efforts.
Last week Ward was named to the CBS Sports first-team midseason All-America team and to the second team as selected by the Associated. Press.
