Buckeyes Land Commitment From 5-Star Safety Tyreke Johnson

With the Ohio State coaching staff out recruiting all across the country, some of their previous work paid off when 5-star Florida defensive back Tyreke Johnson (6-1 191) announced his commitment to Ohio State in a video posted by 247Sports Tuesday night.

Johnson (Trinity Christian Academy/Jacksonville, FL) is rated the No. 1 safety in the 2018 class and the No. 12 player in the nation overall by Rivals. He is a 4-star prospect and the No. 5 safety overall per the 247Sports Composite.

He visited Ohio State officially in October and the visit obviously made an impact. He is a former high school teammate of current Buckeye freshman cornerback Shaun Wade, and that likely didn’t hurt either.

Johnson committed to OSU over offers from Alabama, Clemson, Auburn, Florida, LSU, Florida State, Notre Dame, Stanford, and a dozen other top-level programs.

As a player, Johnson is a long defensive back who could project to cornerback or safety.

He played corner in high school and showed the physicality that projects well to any position in the backfield. He has prototypical length for a cornerback, which is one reason why some project him as a safety.

He is not unlike current Buckeye freshman Jeffrey Okudah in that way. Okudah was projected by the recruiting services as a safety until it was made known that OSU was recruiting him as a cornerback.

Johnson is also a dangerous punter.

The commitment now gives Ohio State three of the top eight safeties in the 2018 class according to the 247Sports Composite. Johnson joins No. 2 safety Jaiden Woodbey (5-star) and No. 8 safety Josh Proctor (4-star), as well as cornerbacks Sevyn Banks and Marcus Hooker.

Johnson is commitment No. 19 for the Buckeyes. They have room for a few more, assuming there are no decommitments, which might be a poor assumption at the moment.
