Per Reports, Former OSU OC Ed Warinner Headed to Michigan

Ed Warinner

According to a report from Football Scoop and a confirmation from Sports Illustrated’s Bruce Feldman, former Ohio State offensive coordinator Ed Warinner has accepted a position on Jim Harbaugh’s staff at the University of Michigan.

Per Feldman, Warinner’s role is to be determined, but expect it to be involved with the offensive line where Michigan has underachieved for years. According to the Detroit Free Press, it could simply be as an analyst role as Michigan currently has all of their assistant spots filled.

Following an excellent run as Urban Meyer’s offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator at Ohio State from 2012 through 2014, Warinner was bumped up to offensive coordinator in 2015 and 2016. Following the 2015 season, he was removed from the offensive line and moved to tight ends coach to lessen his load as coordinator in 2016.

The 2016 season was his last at Ohio State and Warinner moved on to coach the offensive line at Minnesota in 2017. The Gophers finished third in the Big Ten in rushing behind Ohio State and Wisconsin this past season, averaging 182.4 yards rushing per game.

Michigan would be the 10th school for Warinner, whose resume includes Michigan’s three biggest rivals in Ohio State (2012-2016), Notre Dame (2010-2011), and Michigan State (1985-1986).

  1. Big deal, 10th new team he’s coach for, there is a reason for that. A very average coach, was so glad to see him get canned at OSU.

  2. Why does everybody seem to think that Haskins will be the starter in the fall? Whenever Burrows played, I thought he was spot on and is a better runner, well maybe or maybe not, but sure did a good job running the offense. And don’t forget the other QB, Tate Martell. He should have learned a lot running the practice squad against the top OSU offenses. He should really be ready to make a go of it. It should be a very interesting battle for that position this Spring and then in Preseason this summer. Good luck to all three and may the best man win and the others ready to go in case the starter falls short. Hopefully, Coach Meyer will not make the mistake he made at Iowa and one or two other games last season when J T wasn’t doing all that well and put in the next QB up into the game!

    1. Its because Haskins has that big arm. People who don’t have a good understanding of the game don’t understand its not arm strength that makes a good QB. Its decision making. The better decision maker will win the job and be the better QB. If a QB can make good decisions AND have a big arm then they are pretty special. Doesn’t matter how big your arm is when you are throwing it to the wrong people and not on time.

  3. This is not good news for OSU. Warriner is a far better OL coach than Strudawa. Should never have been let go.

  4. Is it a good hire, and will he be used to coach the OL? The article says scUM has all of its assistant spots filled. Someone would have to leave or be reassigned for him to take over that role.

There was obviously some ill feelings between he and Meyer by the time he left OSU; and losing his OC title was probably the breaking point of their relationship, but it obviously had to be done.

The main problem with the offense remains Meyer. He has a great offensive mind on his staff (Wilson) and I am certain Meyer over-rode a lot of play calling this past season, instead of letting Wilson do his thing. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have seen the same stagnant zone read offense so often with JTB under Wilson that we saw in previous years.

With Barrett now gone, the hope has to be that Meyer will let Wilson be Wilson. But given his penchant for control, don’t be surprised if we see QBs still running that same zone read play on third or fourth down, even if it’s Haskins (who is NOT a zone read QB). Hope I’m wrong.

  5. Mr. Gustin, you beat me to it. An excellent hire by Harbaugh. He really is a “great offensive line coach”.

  6. He’s a better offensive line coach than Studrawa by a long shot.

I detest Hairball as much as every other human being, but, this is a good hire. Warinner knows every concept in CEO Meyers play philosophy so while he’s building their offensive line, he can pass on where the weaknesses are in those philosophies.

We’ll see if the Buckeyes CEO will finally get up from behind the desk and actually start hands on coaching again.

    1. i think this sucks –OSU should’ve kept EW as the oline coach a couple years ago as he did a GREAT job..I hate when former good coaches go to a rival team and you cant get worse than scUM of course..sadly this is a good hire for them.

      1. Tis the PETER PRINCIPAL.. “People rise to their level of incompetence”. Warinner did exactly that at OSU.

    2. In your opinion, which doesn’t really matter.

  7. Resorting to hiring disgruntled past Buckeye assistant coach seems a bit desperate though he was a good O-line coach. Hopefully this will cause Meyer advance his offensive philosophy instead of “run JT left” as Warinner can now tell Jimmy all of Meyer’ secret special plays and blocking schemes. Either that or we can all hope for Harbaugh to let Warinner call plays.
