Buckeyes Have Souls Cleansed at Penn State 79-56

No. 8 Ohio State (22-6, 13-2) went into Penn State (19-9, 9-6) Thursday night looking for revenge, but instead they found a Nittany Lion team that had other, much more sinister, things in mind.

Penn State guard Tony Carr scored a game-high 30 points in pacing the Nittany Lions, who shot .481 from the field and .450 from three-point range on 20 attempts. Carr was one of four Penn State players who scored in double figures.

The Buckeyes, meanwhile, had just two scorers in double digits, led by C.J. Jackson’s 13 points. Keita Bates-Diop added 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting.

For the game, Ohio State shot just .389 from the field and 2-of-15 from three-point territory.

The Buckeyes only lead of the game came at 4-2 with 18 minutes remaining in the first half. They had no answers for the other 38 minutes.

At one point, Penn State’s lead in the second half ballooned to 30 points at 54-24 with 17:07 to play. Ohio State responded with a 13-1 run to make it an 18-point game. A three-pointer from Shep Garner got Penn State going again. The Buckeyes responded with the next five points, but they would get no closer than 16 points.

Penn State opened the lead back up to 20 points and kept it there for most of the game’s final eight minutes.

The loss dropped Ohio State into a first-place tie with Michigan State at 13-2 in conference play. Purdue’s loss at Wisconsin Thursday night moves them down to 12-3 in B1G play. Nebraska is currently fourth in the standings with an 11-4 mark.

The Buckeyes next play Sunday at Michigan. The Wolverines are fifth in the Big Ten with a 10-5 record.

  1. So pathetic OSU must have just been lucky against MSU and Purdue? I did HS basketball broadcasts for years, and watch a lot of college ball. Sometimes you just don’t match up well, sometimes you run into a team that has a career night when your guys can’t throw the ball in the ocean from the tide line. OSU is not as good as we hoped, but PSU is not a bad team by any means. Perhaps the trolls can wait for the end of the season before throwing the Buckeyes on the trash heap.

    1. Don’t fall for the thought that OSU isn’t as good as fans hoped. Think back to the November expectations. 😉

  2. This team has been a pleasant surprise to me. They have overachieved and played above their heads the entire Big 10 season considering I don’t think they are that talented of a team across the board. They were not good last night and PSU once again played out their ass like they did in Cbus three weeks ago. But who predicted Purdue losing to Wisconsin last night? Win out and we get a Big 10 regular season championship. Who would’ve predicted this back in December?

  3. Look. This team is vastly over achieving this year. They really should not be where they are right now. Enjoy the season as it comes. They are probably going to lose a lot more as it nears the end. I really don’t see them winning the conference regular season title or the conference tournament. And while it is disappointing to see them lose to a team like PSU, that kind of inconsistency is expected from a young team. Don’t let ridiculous expectations run amok. This team is a prelude to whats to come. Two more years are needed. Next year is going to be better.

  4. Big Ten games are always an adventure with officiating when “TV Teddy” Valentine is calling games.

  5. Next game will tell what the team is made. Back in 1965 UCLA got blown out by Illinois but still came back to win the NCAA championship.

  6. To quote Ron Burgundy..that escalated quickly! Penn State is talented and could win a title with Chris Holtmann as coach. Refs were HORRIBLE both ways. Phantom fouls taking players out of games is the most annoying part of college hoops. Please change it to 6 fouls! Just in case somebody didn’t notice, our senior Kam Williams was back.

  7. No excuses. That was one of the most embarrassing displays I’ve seen since way back when the football team got run out of Iowa last fall. Very disappointing.

  8. Losing to this bad PSU team looked bad enough. Getting completely and thoroughly laughed out of the building against that team is pathetically unacceptable.

      1. Yes, they are. That team is literally a shit show. All the talk about them having 3 NBA players on that roster……..ROTFL. Maybe 1 or 2 of them will get a look . In 2 years they’ll be delivering newspapers or mowing lawns for a living.

Getting laughed out of PSU is, well let me spell it carefully for you since the English Language is something you struggle with……..”P A T H E T I C”. Getting blown off a bad teams court makes you a joke.
