Gaffney (6-9 190) attends Garfield Heights where he was named First-Team All-State after averaging 18.2 points per game this past season as a junior.
Gaffney is a 5-star prospect and ranked the No. 3 power forward in the 2019 class and the No. 18 player in the nation overall. He is the No. 1 player in Ohio per the 247Sports Composite. He chose Ohio State over offers from Kansas, Louisville, Michigan State, Florida, and Georgetown.
This is Buckeye head coach Chris Holtmann’s most significant recruiting moment at Ohio State in the 10 months he has been on the job.
On the court, Gaffney is an explosive finisher with tremendous length. He is a shot blocker who plays well in the paint, but also has plenty of perimeter skills. He has an easy stroke from three, and can pull up off the dribble or catch and shoot. Gaffney’s form is natural, and his perimeter skills also extend to his ability to drive as defenders close out on him. He will have to add strength, but the rest of his game is dripping with potential, as you can see in the highlights below.
The verbal commitment now gives Ohio State the No. 2 class in the Big Ten and the No. 6 class in the nation. Gaffney is the only player currently committed to the Buckeyes’ 2019 class, however. At the moment, OSU will have room for a class of three signees. Gaffney gives the Buckeyes a great, great start.
