Five-Star Power Forward Alonzo Gaffney Commits to Ohio State

Alonzo Gaffney Chris Holtmann Ohio State Basketball Recruiting

Five-star Cleveland power forward Alonzo Gaffney announced his commitment to Ohio State on Tuesday. He released the news via a tweet.

Gaffney (6-9 190) attends Garfield Heights where he was named First-Team All-State after averaging 18.2 points per game this past season as a junior.

Gaffney is a 5-star prospect and ranked the No. 3 power forward in the 2019 class and the No. 18 player in the nation overall. He is the No. 1 player in Ohio per the 247Sports Composite. He chose Ohio State over offers from Kansas, Louisville, Michigan State, Florida, and Georgetown.

This is Buckeye head coach Chris Holtmann’s most significant recruiting moment at Ohio State in the 10 months he has been on the job.

On the court, Gaffney is an explosive finisher with tremendous length. He is a shot blocker who plays well in the paint, but also has plenty of perimeter skills. He has an easy stroke from three, and can pull up off the dribble or catch and shoot. Gaffney’s form is natural, and his perimeter skills also extend to his ability to drive as defenders close out on him. He will have to add strength, but the rest of his game is dripping with potential, as you can see in the highlights below.

The verbal commitment now gives Ohio State the No. 2 class in the Big Ten and the No. 6 class in the nation. Gaffney is the only player currently committed to the Buckeyes’ 2019 class, however. At the moment, OSU will have room for a class of three signees. Gaffney gives the Buckeyes a great, great start.

  1. I agree that keeping him at home is a big deal…we need more of this! Go Bucks!

  2. Chris Holtmann certainly appears to be headed in the right direction. Don’t know about anyone else but, keeping Alonzo Gaffney home is a major step forward in Ohio State recruiting. Alonzo isn’t quite as smooth as KB-D, but he’s an intense player much like JaeSean Tate. Good to above average defender. Outstanding on the boards, and shoots at a really high level. One thing that stands out to me is how strong he is already. It’s weird saying that a young man from the state going to Ohio State is “coup”, but that’s been our reality for far too long. LOVE this young man coming to Ohio State. Maybe he’s the tip of spear keeping Ohio’s best Basketball players home.

  3. Great news, now let’s get 3 more just like him. I hate seeing the #1 Ohio player wearing MSU Green or Duke blue. The FSU transfer G will be able to start that season as well! Just imagine what he could do if he could land 2-3 classes like Thad Matta, this is a great start and an in state big time recruit.
