Keita Bates-Diop Selected in Second Round of NBA Draft

Keita Bates-Diop Ohio State Basketball Buckeyes NBA Draft

Ohio State forward Keita Bates-Diop was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round of the NBA Draft Thurday night. He was chosen with the 48th overall pick in the draft. Projections had him going much sooner, mostly in the late first round.

Bates-Diop was the Big Ten Player of the Year this past season for the Buckeyes. He averaged 19.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, and scored at least 24 points in his final four games as a Buckeye — three of which came in the postseason.

Starting 70 of the 109 games that he played in, Bates-Diop finished his Ohio State career averaging 11.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.

Bates-Diop was expected to become the first Buckeye selected in the first round of the NBA Draft since D’Angelo Russell was selected second overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2015 draft.

  1. KB-D is going to have a terrific and long career in the NBA. We really got to see him scratching the surface of his talent.

Congratulations Keita, enjoy a great career.

      1. I believe Keita will fool a lot of doubters. John Havilcek was in my class and he fooled a lot of people as well.

      2. Depends on one’s definition of terrific, if he gets to a second contract, he’s had a terrific career, at least financially. Where he is drafted, he can come along slowly without undue expectations and can turn into a fine ballplayer with an extended career.

        1. Even though Scottie Pippen was drafted a round higher they are the same type of player. They may not be the spotlight of the team but without them the team isn’t as dynamic. Keita’s early injury aside, Thad Matta just wasn’t good developing forwards and especially not centers. What they had when they came in is what they left with. Holtmann is a better developer of his entire roster. That showed up immediately with how the team played as one all year. The last several years hasn’t been much fun watching the Buckeyes play. That change was immediately noticeable last year. Keita had he stuck around another year would have been a first round pick I think. I don’t really like watching pro sports very much but I’ll probably be checking in on Keita from time to time. I think he has a terrific career. Guys don’t have to be HOFers to have had a terrific career.
