New Report Says Urban Meyer Knew About 2015 Zach Smith Allegations

Ohio State wide receivers coach Zach Smith

A new report from Brett McMurphy says that text messages from 2015 show that Urban Meyer was aware of domestic violence allegations against then-wide receivers coach Zach Smith at the time.

That would contradict what Meyer told reporters last week.

At Big Ten Media Days on July 24, Meyer said, “I was never told about anything. Never anything came to light, never had a conversation about it. So I know nothing about it. I asked people back at the office to call and see what happened, and they came back and said they know nothing.”

However, McMurphy’s report cites text messages between Meyer’s wife Shelley and Smith’s then-wife Courtney that show that Shelley Meyer was, in fact, aware of the allegations.

Shelley Meyer: “I am with you! A lot of women stay hoping it will get better. I don’t blame you! But just want u to be safe. Do you have a restraining order? He scares me”
Courtney Smith: “Restraining orders don’t do anything in Ohio-I tried to get protection order which is what started this whole investigation. And that should go through soon finally. It’s hard bc you have to prove immediate danger. Legal system is tough. Basically you have to prove he will kill u to get protective order”
Shelley Meyer: “Geesh! Even w the pics? Didn’t law enforcement come to your place ever??”

McMurphy provides details of a text message exchange from November 2015 between Courtney Smith and Lindsey Voltolini, the wife of an Ohio State staffer. If accurate, it would suggest that Urban Meyer was aware of the allegations.

Courtney Smith: “(Zach’s) trying to make me look crazy bc that’s what Shelley is saying (he’s doing)”
Lindsey Voltolini: “He (Urban) just said he (Zach) denied everything”
Courtney Smith: “I hope urban is smarter than that”
Lindsey Volotolini: “He (Urban) doesn’t know what to think”
Courtney Smith: “I don’t really care. Ya know”
Lindsey Voltolini: “Yeah, don’t worry about urb”

McMurphy also reported that the records from the Smiths’ divorce were initially sealed at Zach Smith’s request in November 2015. They were only unsealed this morning.

McMurphy’s report also includes more troubling details about the results of the alleged abuse.

Photos that Courtney said she shared via text with other wives show bruises on Courtney’s neck and arms from beatings she suffered in 2014 and 2015. Another photo shows blood gushing out of her thumb when Zach cut her with the metal top of a smokeless tobacco can after another 2014 incident.

Ohio State opens fall practice on Friday, August 3. Urban Meyer is scheduled to speak to the media next Tuesday, August 7.

TheOzone has reached out to Ohio State for comment on the new report.

  1. How far down the line is a head coach responsible for the action of others? I can see him being responsible for the players. Now he has to put his job on the line every day for what some dumb ass assistant coach does? And three years later at that?
As for his wife telling him, just because she knew doesn’t mean she told him. I have heard her say in the past that she didn’t tell her husband something because she knew he would obsess on it and he needed to worry about the team. Lots of women hold things from their husbands to not worry them. Even the victim admits that she has no proof that Urban knew.

  2. BULLSHIT LETS PLAY FOOTBALL AND LET THE SMITH’S TAKE CARE OF THERE OWN DIRT. NOT ANYBODY ELSE BUSINESS

  3. Seems like another instance of what’s all too common these days – rush to judgment by the media. Don’t bother to get all the facts, just rush ahead with the story. In the days of 24/7 reporting and commentary, you can’t wait to gather the truth before “breaking” the story. The truth, whatever it is, can catch up later.
From what I’ve read, it seems like a lot of people knew at least something of what was happening with the Smiths. None of them, apparently, took any assertive action. But Meyer gets the brunt of the blame.
Hope the media doesn’t manipulate this into Tressel #2, where it’s not the offense itself that’s so bad, but lying about not knowing about the offense.

  4. Why now? If this happened back in 2015, why is this coming up just as football season is about to begin. I think this is a vendetta against Coach Meyer for some reason. Maybe this guy, McMurphy, should be investigated to see if he and his accusations are legitimate! Sometimes information between women are secretive and Mrs. Meyer decided to keep it between the two of them. So with that being said, let’s pray that nothing more will come of it. Coach Smith is gone and let this mess be taken care of in court between Zack and Courtney! Or as one comment made above, let Zack’s Grandfather and former Coach Earl Bruce take care of it. AT THIS TIME, KEEP COACH MEYER AND MRS. MEYER OUT OF IT! Do you suppose McMurphy has anything to do with TTUN? Just a thought.

  5. I don’t know who Brett McMurphy is, but it’s apparent he wants someone to believe that Urban did some shady shit. No police report, no charges. Nothing. So Courtney Smith says he did something, Zach denied it. What exactly, was Urban supposed to do? And why this big push to let everyone know he knew about it? My guess is that McMurphy has an agenda. I don’t like people with agendas. Shit Sturrers.

  6. I still don’t know how he lied… or how people say he lied… he said he asked people to look into it… so he clearly know it happened… People are taking his comment out of context… he was asked if he knew about the abuse… and he should have answered in reverse… like this:
“I asked people back at the office to call and see what happened, and they came back and said they know nothing. I was never told about anything. Never anything came to light, never had a conversation about it. So I know nothing about it.”
To me he said he knew about it, he just didn’t get the details that we are now getting.

  7. It was a family matter, not a cover up. If he did know, and Zack’s denied it and there were no arrests then it becomes a He said, She said. So no facts were presented to him. In his shoes, I’d probably ask him, then tell Zack’s Grandfather and good friend Earl Bruce and let the family deal with it.

  8. WOW! Jeez – I can’t really see why he would have reason to lie about this – he’s always preaching integrity and such. Obviously, by the text account it seems pretty clear that his wife knew about it and fairly certain that he may have known as well. What seemed to be a time of excitement for football season will most assuredly be a 2-3 month —–show. And to Charlie’s point was ZACH SMITH really worth it? I would think even Earl Bruce would have let him go.

  9. If true, I don’t see how he gets out of this. If there is clear evidence that he covered up the 2015 incident which contradicts his comments during the press conference, I can’t support him. I’ll wait until more information comes out, but based on these texts and the fact that he said he knew nothing during the press conference, that’s an apparent lie. Good Lord! Was Zach Smith REALLY worth it?!

    1. He’s word against her word. If no chargers where filed in 2015 and police came to the house and she had those bruise how did no chargers get filed ? Not saying she lied but how many times have we seen woman make up the whole story over the last few yrs ? So if he wasn’t arrested for it how do we know if it’s true or not?

      1. Even if I give you all those points, it does not explain why Urban lied. He said he didn’t know about any of the 2015 allegations, but he did.

        1. BuckinRaleigh………and if he DID in fact know, showing that he lied to the public, did he also lie about not knowing of Smith’s actions in 2009 while at Florida?

Ultimately it’s Zach Smith’s fault, but from a public perception, recruiting, and TEAM perspective, Urban was his boss who “potentially” knew and failed to act to protect the integrity of either Florida OR Ohio State.
