Four-Star Arizona Safety Lathan Ransom Includes OSU In Final Five

Ohio State Buckeyes football Lathan Ransom

Tucson, Arizona (Salpointe Catholic High School) safety Lathan Ransom released his final group of five schools on Tuesday via Twitter. Ohio State made the list, and was joined by Oklahoma, LSU, Notre Dame, and Texas.

Ransom (6-1 200) is the top safety in the West. Ranked the No. 5 safety overall in the 247Sports Composite, Ransom is ranked the No. 72 player in the 2020 class overall. He is ranked the No. 2 safety per 247’s own rankings and has been invited to The Opening Finals and also the All-American Bowl.

All five of his top teams will be receiving or have already received an official visit.

Ransom visited LSU and Oklahoma back in the spring. He is scheduled to be at Notre Dame this weekend, then Texas the following weekend, and then Ohio State the weekend after that.

An All-State selection and player of the year in his region, Ransom tallied 82 tackles, six interceptions, and eight PBUs last year as a junior. He also finished with 1,242 all-purpose yards and scored eight touchdowns.

Ransom covers a ton of ground as both a run defender and centerfielder in the passing game. He is a physical defender regardless of ball delivery, and triggers well in coverage situation. He has also played some press corner for his Salpointe Catholic team.

Here is his scouting report from

Athletic build with length. Frame to add weight without sacrificing flexibility. Highly instinctual defensive back with tremendous range. Hard hitter that looks for loud tackles. Covers ground in the back half. Reacts well to plays in front of him. Smooth in his backpedal and closes on the football. Versatility to contribute at nickel and make an impact near the line of scrimmage. Could improve tackling technique to avoid leading with his head. Potential multi-year starter at the Power Five level and upside as NFL Draft Day 2 selection.

So far, with just four projections having been cast, it is anybody’s Crystal Ballgame.

Four-star Michigan safety Makari Paige recently put Ohio State in his top group. Both safeties will be at OSU for their official visits the weekend of June 21.
