The-Ozone Fall Practice Insider: Offensive Line Taking Shape?

Ohio State Buckeyes DL Drills

COLUMBUS — The Ohio State Buckeyes were back on the practice field Tuesday morning and the media was invited to watch about 35 minutes of practice.

As always with these brief windows, there isn’t much to see, and there is never any scrimmaging. Today we weren’t on hand to see any one-on-one drilling.

Position groups go off and work among themselves. The quarterbacks work with the receivers for a bit, and they were also working with the running backs on the read option.

Justin Fields was repping first with the quarterbacks, followed by Chris Chugunov and Gunnar Hoak.

We also got a good look at the first two offensive lines as they stand right now. Today it looked like this:

LT – Thayer Munford/Josh Alabi
LG – Jonah Jackson/Matthew Jones
C – Josh Myers/Harry Miller
RG – Wyatt Davis/Gavin Cupp
RT – Branden Bowen/Nicholas Petit-Frere

It should be noted that while the freshmen offensive linemen were off working in a group, fellow freshman Harry Miller was drilling with the ones and twos. It is clear that his trajectory is different than most freshmen.

The right tackle position has opened just as it did in the spring, but injuries forced Branden Bowen to move around. It will be interesting to see if the offensive line changes if there are no injuries.

The first group of defensive backs were Jeff Okudah and Damon Arnette at cornerback and Jordan Fuller and Shaun Wade at safety.  They didn’t line up, so it isn’t entirely clear if Fuller is actually at free safety as expected.

I tried watching the linebackers to get a depth chart there, but they were 100 yards away and repping four at a time. Pete Werner was in the fourth group with the walk-ons, so there was no point in trying to decipher a depth chart at that point.

Austin Mack was not practicing early. Instead, he was inside the practice facility bouncing a medicine ball off the wall to himself.

Per OSU, freshman walk-on quarterback JP Andrade is not yet practicing. He will join the team when the roster adds the rest of the walk-ons when school starts.

Freshman wide receiver Jameson Williams was practicing today after spending portions of the first practice jogging around the field.

Here’s a couple of videos.
