The Ohio State coaches haven’t been too forthcoming on the depth chart so far in fall camp, but not every position is a question mark.
Of those that are still in question, we have a pretty good idea of the pecking order based on videos tweeted out, practice reps seen, conversations with players, and talkative sources.
Based upon my questionable powers of educated guesswork, this is my best guess for a current Ohio State depth chart, which the coaches themselves say don’t even exist.
But when has that ever stopped any of us.
Quarterback
1 Justin Fields, Soph 6-3 223
4 Chris Chugunov, GSr 6-1 208
12 Gunnar Hoak, rJr 6-4 212
Note: Ryan Day will be naming a starter on Monday. Justin Fields has been taking reps with the ones throughout camp.
Running Back
2 JK Dobbins, Jr 5-10 217
30 Demario McCall, rJr 5-9 195 OR
33 Master Teague, rFr 5-11 220 OR
23 Marcus Crowley, Fr 6-1 205 OR
22 Steele Chambers, Fr 6-2 215
Note: Ryan Day is still waiting for a backup running back to emerge. There are some talented options, however.
H-Back
14 KJ Hill, rSr 6-0 195
80 CJ Saunders, rSr 5-10 190 OR
26 Jaelen Gill, rFr 6-0 195
Note: Expect all three to play this season. The top two will be part of a regular rotation.
X Receiver
9 Binjimen Victor, Sr 6-4 199
15 Jaylen Harris, Jr 6-5 215 OR
5 Garrett Wilson, Fr 6-0 188
Note: Garrett Wilson and Jaylen Harris are going to have one hell of a battle down the stretch to make it into the rotation. All three will play. The winner of the second spot will play more.
Z Receiver
11 Austin Mack, Sr 6-2 215
17 Chris Olave, Soph 6-1 185
87 Ellijah Gardiner, rSoph 6-4 205 OR
6 Jameson Williams, Fr 6-2 170
7 Kamryn Babb, rFr 6-0 195 (Inj.)
Note: Ryan Day said on Wednesday all four of the healthy Z receivers will play this season. Austin Mack and Chris Olave will be part of the starting rotation, but it sounds like there will be snaps for Ellijah Gardiner and Jameson Williams as well.
Tight End
89 Luke Farrell, rJr 6-6 250
13 Rashod Berry, rSr 6-4 255 OR
88 Jeremy Ruckert, Soph 6-5 250
81 Jake Hausmann, rJr 6-4 245
83 Cormontae Hamilton, Fr 6-2 263
Note: There are plans for the top three tight ends to play regularly this season. They did the same last year, but you could see it even more this year.
Left Tackle
75 Thayer Munford, Jr 6-6 310
58 Josh Alabi, rSr 6-5 305
63 Kevin Woidke, rSr 6-6 305
Note: Thayer Munford is on portion control regarding his reps this fall, but Ryan Day said he’ll be fine by game time.
Left Guard
73 Jonah Jackson, GSr 6-4 305
55 Matthew Jones, rFr 6-4 305
68 Ryan Jacoby, Fr 6-5 290
Note: Jonah Jackson has fit right into this offensive line and is already providing leadership.
Center
71 Josh Myers, rSoph 6-5 310
77 Harry Miller, Fr 6-4 310
61 Gavin Cupp, rJr 6-4 308
Note: Josh Myers has taken ownership of this position, but that hasn’t stopped him from raving about true freshman Harry Miller. Gavin Cupp is taking snaps just so that they can have as many guys with snapping experience as possible.
Right Guard
52 Wyatt Davis, rSoph 6-4 313
61 Gavin Cupp, rJr 6-4 308
66 Enokk Vimahi, Fr 6-4 270
Note: This has been Wyatt Davis’ spot since December and he hasn’t slumped at all. Gavin Cupp can play anywhere on the interior.
Right Tackle
76 Branden Bowen, rSr 6-7 315 OR
78 Nicholas Petit-Frere, rFr 6-5 295
74 Max Wray, rFr 6-6 300
79 Dawand Jones, Fr 6-8 360
Note: Branden Bowen and Nicholas Petit-Frere will continue to roll in with the ones. They have played well enough that both Ryan Day and Greg Studrawa have said that they could see a rotation here.
Defensive End
2 Chase Young, Jr 6-5 265
11 Tyreke Smith, Soph 6-4 265
8 Javontae Jean-Baptiste, rFr 6-5 245
33 Zach Harrison, Fr 6-6 255
Note: There is no real depth chart here, just more of a tiered layer of first team, second team, third team, etc. In other words, Tyreke Smith could just as easily be behind Jonathon Cooper on the actual depth chart.
Nose Tackle
53 Davon Hamilton, rSr 6-4 310 AND
67 Robert Landers, rSr 6-1 285 AND
72 Tommy Togiai, Soph 6-3 300
98 Jerron Cage, rSoph 6-2 295
Note: Larry Johnson has already said he wants to rotate three nose tackles this year and believes that all three can be called upon at any time.
Three Tech
9 Jashon Cornell, rSr 6-3 285
6 Taron Vincent, Soph 6-2 293
92 Haskell Garrett, Jr 6-2 295
52 Antwuan Jackson, rJr 6-2 299
90 Jaden McKenzie, Fr 6-3 285
Note: Jashon Cornell closed the spring with the ones and nothing has changed. Larry Johnson has said he’s got three players here that can rotate. Antwuan Jackson can float back and forth between either defensive tackle spot.
Defensive End
18 Jonathon Cooper, Sr 6-4 257
54 Tyler Friday, Soph 6-3 260
17 Alex Williams, rFr 6-6 270
97 Noah Potter, Fr 6-6 252
Will Linebacker
39 Malik Harrison, Sr 6-3 240
19 Dallas Gant, Soph 6-3 232
41 Tommy Eichenberg, Fr 6-3 225
47 Justin Hilliard, rSr 6-1 235 (inj.)
Note: There are no surprises here so far. We also haven’t really seen the linebackers in action this fall, so the situation outside of the two-deep might be a bit sketchy.
Mike Linebacker
32 Tuf Borland, rJr 6-1 232
5 Baron Browning, Jr 6-3 248
7 Teradja Mitchell, Soph 6-2 242
Note: All three will play. The coaches won’t confirm it, but this is the pecking order right now and nothing Greg Mattison said on Wednesday makes me think anything will be changing here.
Sam Linebacker
20 Pete Werner, Jr 6-3 239
36 K’Vaughan Pope, Soph 6-1 231
16 Cade Stover, Fr 6-4 225
37 Craig Young, Fr 6-4 200
Note: When Greg Mattison talks about Pete Werner, it’s reminiscent of when Urban Meyer would talk about John Simon.
Bullet
25 Brendon White, Jr 6-2 215
23 Jahsen Wint, rJr 5-10 200
Note: Nothing new here other than both continue to play well in their new roles.
Cornerback
1 Jeff Okudah, Jr 6-1 200
12 Sevyn Banks, Soph 6-1 200
21 Marcus Williamson, Jr 5-10 180
Note: Marcus Williamson may actually be at strong safety, it’s hard to tell because the strong safeties and cornerbacks work drill together at times. Can a cornerback other than Jeff Okudah and Damon Arnette work his way into a rotation?
Free Safety
4 Jordan Fuller, Sr 6-2 205
14 Isaiah Pryor, Jr 6-2 200
15 Josh Proctor, Soph 6-2 205
29 Marcus Hooker, rFr 5-11 200
38 Bryson Shaw, Fr 6-2 185
Note: The battle between Isaiah Pryor and Josh Proctor will continue throughout camp, but every time we have seen them, it has been Pryor at No. 2.
Strong Safety
24 Shaun Wade, rSoph 6-1 194
10 Amir Riep, Jr 6-0 195
21 Marcus Williamson, Jr 5-10 180
28 Ronnie Hickman, Fr 6-1 200 (Inj.)
Note: Again, I’m not sure if Marcus Williamson is actually here, but his experience as a nickel back would make him a good fit.
Cornerback
3 Damon Arnette, rSr 6-0 195
26 Cameron Brown, Soph 6-0 188
13 Tyreke Johnson, rFr 6-1 195
Note: There was some buzz about Cameron Brown over the summer. Damon Arnette has been one of the most talked about players of camp. Shaun Wade could always factor in here as well.

The buckeyes need a lead blocker on short yardage plays. Put Robert Landers at fullback 6’1 285. He has the quickness to open the hole. Woody will be smiling.
On short yardage plays put Robert Landers at Fullback and run behind him. What a load. He is quick to the hole and would be a great lead blocker. Woody would be smiling.
I’ve never seen a player who has made NO plays get called great more the Pete Werner. They talk about him like he is Ray Lewis. It’s pathetic honestly. Atleast say he needs to improve. Nooo…They always say how great his is. How amazing he is. Oh Please! He was terrible last year and we had to watch coaches say he was one of our best players…Lmao. We are all expected to give him as pass for poor play. It’s NOT a conspiracy it’s NOT rocket science. He was a D-List player point blank.
Could nto agree with you more..and I would throw Tuf Borland in there as well…Taking wrong angles on ball carriers has nothing to do with coaching, it has everything to do with instinct, which at the linebacker position is required to be a successful one. Werner is also an arm tackler. I never saw him hit someone all of last season, he is pathetic.
That’s a solid depth chart. Hard to find a position that we aren’t two deep at. Should be a good one. I’m sure there will be some whining and crying when they see your projected linebackers though.
