WATCH: Buckeye Wide Receivers, Defensive Backs Preview Season

Ohio State football Jeff Okudah

The Ohio State football team moved a lot closer to the start of its 2019 season on Tuesday.

The start of fall semester classes in Columbus is a sure sign that the first football game of the year can’t be far away.

In fact, the Buckeyes will kick off their season against Florida Atlantic in 11 days.

Tuesday night, OSU wide receivers coach Brian Hartline and defensive backs coach and co-defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley met with the media to review fall camp.

Topics included the play of freshman wide receivers Garrett Wilson and Jameson Williams, as well as the growth of H receiver Jaelen Gill.

On the defensive side of the ball, there is a lot to discuss as the Buckeyes reshape their entire unit with the new Bullet position.

Jahsen Wint and Brendon White shared a lot of insight into the position, where it fits into the defense, and what its primary responsibilities are.

You can watch those interviews in their entirety below. More will be added throughout the evening.

  1. questioner to Shaun Wade: “bouncing between positions” …

suggests what about our kind of thinking?

NB: Shaun’s repeated descriptions and illustrations of “route concepts” …how do they match up with Bloom’s Taxonomy, Cognitive Domain, “Levels of Learning”?

What does that matchup suggest about how Hafley… and which other of our coaches… are thinking?

  2. Hafley interview response to ‘we can’t figure out which position [Wade] plays’…

Hafley: [smile, gentle laugh] …hopfully that means FAU can’t figure it out either…”.

The continuing process and significance of TACTICAL DECEPTION.

A study of tactical principles and practices… ‘could… potentially…be’… useful in recognizing the terms and illustrations our coaches are using… and their responses to the usual “is he here or there, this or that, now or then… questions of our daily two-step….

    1. Binjimen Victor interview terms:

what’s the attitudinal difference between ‘make a play when your number is called’ and…

‘making a play’ when ? is called and…

      ‘making a play’… consistently?

[IMO these interviews are a wealth of information regarding how the players, coaches, and interviewers ‘see’ [perceive] the game… and ‘what to think’ [application]. ]

Inasmuch as ‘leaders’ [formal and informal] ‘influence’ followers to achieve an objective… ‘what to think’ without the why’s [values, relationships, mission, skills] defines ‘indoctrination’; with the ‘why’s’ weaves attitudes with skills to produce… the essential ‘critical thinking skills’ of uni-versity.

Of course it all comes down to ‘who do you trust’… so it is of fundamental importance to choose who you trust by how you trust. By faith yes… but not by blind faith, or by some projection onto others hiding your own self-pity or pride. This IMO, is practically why ‘family’ or ‘fellowship’… defined in a certain way… is as essential to building a team relationship as the moral of ‘honesty’ is to practicing it.

  3. What I’ve taken away since spring ball got underway and now through fall camp. There’s not a coach on this staff I wouldn’t want to play for. They have done a fantastic job in front of the camera’s, they exude confidence while not sharing too many intricacies and nuances of their respective positions. They aren’t saying all the right things, but, they’re telling us REAL things and it’s not through coach speak. Straight no shitters while at the same time spilling the beans. This is probably my favorite coaching staff since 1973 or 74.

If the players have bought in this is going to be a magical year for Buckeye football. In every interview the guys are lock step with the bought in theme. Watch what happens if they take the field in 11 days and all that work, the lessons and methodology clicks. This is going to be a team that will be near impossible to contend with, much less beat. Start fast and play the depth fast without holding back or being concerned with the scoreboard getting out of hand. Our opponents practice as hard as the Buckeyes do. There’s a gun to start a game, and a gun to end the game. Play fast and hard running your O & D schemes and let the opponent worry about their own teams feelings. Dumb injuries occur when teams let up and don’t go 100% with purpose on every play.
