The Buckeyes are three games away from hitting the century mark.
If Ohio State beats Miami this weekend, Bowling Green in 2020, and Akron in 2021, they will have gone a full century since the last time they lost to an in-state opponent.
Oberlin beat the Buckeyes, 7-6 in 1921. That was one year before Ohio Stadium opened.
OSU and Miami will meet for the sixth time in series history on Saturday. The schools played in 1904 and 1911, then took close to a century off before meeting again in 2000, 2005, and 2012.
The Buckeyes have won all five previous meetings, including Urban Meyer’s first game as head coach in 2012. Devin Smith’s one-handed touchdown catch (above) was the highlight of that 56-10 win.
Here are 10 more interesting numbers and notes in advance of the Buckeyes and RedHawks facing off this weekend.

Gerd found this earlier in the week, but it’s worth sharing again. The Buckeyes have held all three opponents they have faced this season under 300 yards of total offense. FAU had 228, Cincinnati got to 273, and Indiana had 257.
That might not seem like that big of an accomplishment, but the 2018 team only held three teams under 300 yards all season long. Rutgers had 134, Tulane had 256, and Michigan State had 274.
The other 11 teams they played all put up more than 390 yards of offense.
The average opponent passed for 245 yards last year, and ran for 158.
5
Chase Young has already recorded five sacks this season. With three more, he’ll place in the top-20 all-time for a Buckeye in a single season. Seven different players accomplished that, including Tyquan Lewis in both 2015 and 2016.
The single-season record is 14, held by Vernon Gholston in 2007.
It’s still early, but Young is currently on pace to break that mark well before the end of the regular season.
9
Through three games, Justin Fields has thrown for nine touchdowns. That’s more than the Buckeyes’ leading passer had in six of the last 40 seasons: 2004, 1993, 1992, 1991, 1988, or 1982.
In fact, it ties the leading passers from Woody Hayes’ last three teams combined. Art Schlichter had four in 1978, Rod Gerald had four in 1977, and James Pacenta had one in 1976.
Yes, the 1976 Ohio State team threw for one touchdown all season.
Fields is already close to halfway to placing in the top-10 for single season touchdown passes by a Buckeye quarterback.
Bobby Hoying (1994) and Jim Karsatos (1985) are currently in 10th place in the official record book with 19 touchdown passes in a year.
13
Fields has rushed for four touchdowns to go with his nine passing scores, for a total of 13 touchdowns for which he is responsible.
He’s more than halfway to placing in the top-10 all time for a Buckeye in a single season. Terrelle Pryor, Joe Germaine, Keith Byars, and Pete Johnson all accounted for 25 touchdowns in a year. They are currently tied for 10th place in the OSU record book.
Dwayne Haskins holds the single-season OSU and Big Ten records with 54.
35
Senior WR K.J. Hill is now 35 catches away from David Boston’s school record of 191.
He had only two receptions against Indiana, and needs to average four per game to break the record by the end of the regular season.
Hill will catch Michael Jenkins for No. 3 on the all-time list with eight more receptions, and would tie Cris Carter for second place with three more catches after that.
96
Damon Arnette’s 96-yard interception return for a touchdown against Indiana was the fourth-longest in OSU history.
The record is a three-way tie at 100 yards between Will Allen (2003), Marlon Kerner (1993), and David Brown (1986).
Kerner and Brown both had their long interceptions at Purdue, meaning that three of the four longest interception returns in Ohio State history have happened in the state of Indiana.
No Buckeye player has ever had two pick-sixes in a single game. Only two players have ever had more than one in a single season. Malik Hooker had three in 2016, and Neil Colzie had two in 1973.
Hooker is the only player with more than two in his Buckeye career. Eight different players have returned two career interceptions for touchdowns.
100
J.K. Dobbins (193) and Master Teague (106) both finished with more than 100 yards rushing at Indiana.
It was the first time the Buckeyes had a pair of 100-yard rushers in the same game since Dobbins and Mike Weber did it against Michigan State in 2017.
193
Dobbins’ 193-yard performance at Indiana ranks as the 26th-best single game rushing total in Buckeye history.
He’s just behind Archie Griffin’s 196 at Washington State in 1974, and ahead of Griffin and Jonathon Wells, who both had 192 against Illinois in 1972 and 2001, respectively.
Eddie George holds the all-time single-game rushing record of 314, also against Illinois in 1995.
425
Through three games, Dobbins has rushed for 425 yards.
In 2004, Lydell Ross was the Buckeyes’ leading rusher with 475 yards all season.
Vince Workman led the 1987 team with a season total of 470 yards rushing.
48-0-1
Since the loss to Oberlin, the Buckeyes are 48-0-1 against teams from the state of Ohio. The only tie came against Wooster in 1924.
A full breakdown of their record against each of 18 different in-state schools since 1922 is below.

My mind can’t seem to get around the fact that three players had 100 yard interception returns. So, if 100 yards is the longest interception return, then shouldn’t the 96 yards be the second longest touchdown return, placing him 4th on the list (3 players at 100)?
Michigan Monday?
They had a bye week.
Sorry to be a stickler, but Oberlin beat Ohio State on October 8, 1921, and Ohio Stadium opened 364 days later on October 7, 1922. The dedication game was against ttun on October 21, 1922.
Yup, you’re right. It’s fixed now. Thanks.
