COLUMBUS — Ohio State head coach Ryan Day spoke with reporters following Ohio State’s 42-0 win over Cincinnati. He spoke of his team’s outstanding performance and some of the individuals that made it happen. Preceding Day, Buckeye quarterback Justin Fields took to the podium to talk about his excellent day. You can check out all of the highlights of what was said below.

Ryan Day

+ What an unbelievable crowd and they were all in their seats for kickoff. That atmosphere can be overwhelming for an opponent. It got the team going.

+ This game wasn’t as “funky” as last week’s game. They emphasized sustaining their performance this week because last week gave them a bad taste in their mouth.

+ JK Dobbins was angry all week about last week’s performance. He got going today and the offensive line did a great job. Tribute to Kevin Wilson and Greg Studrawa.

+ It’s another step in the journey of this defense. In the preseason he knew they were going to be tough. It’s not a finished product, but they’re flying around. This is what they envisioned.

+ Day wasn’t watching the Michigan game. They were singing and dancing in the locker room.

+ He’s not sure where this team is in terms of what he’s envisioned. They want to be the best in the country, but it’s too early in the season to know that.

+ Every week is a whole new season, so they have to keep building on this.

+ The play that stood out to him for Justin Fields, they called a play-action pass, but UC played a different defense than they expected, so he was able to scramble in for the touchdown up the middle.

+ Fields didn’t need to take the sack that lost four yards. He could have thrown it away.

+ Day almost ruptured his Achilles on the near pick six by Chase Young.

+ Justin Fields is throwing the ball very well right now and it’s not by accident. They work hard on it.

+ Fields is definitely being helped by those around him.

+ The shutout is a tribute to the defensive staff. They are all involved in it. They put together a great game plan, but they preach fundamentals and technique. The challenge this week was to not let them score this week once the young guys went in this week. Stripping the ball at the goal line was a good sign that they weren’t quitting.

Justin Fields

+ “I felt really comfortable before the game.” He gained confidence from last week and that helped this week.

+ This game gave JK Dobbins a big dose of confidence.

+ “I think we can be as good as we want to be.”

+ “I think we can do big things this year.”

+ Day has emphasized being smart with the football and he’s doing that.

+ They worked on scrambling and being in sync with the receivers and quarterbacks. They still have work to do there, however.

+ JK Dobbins told him on his touchdown run “Just follow me,” so he did.

+ He didn’t really know what to expect from Cincinnati’s defense, but knew if they just focused on themselves they would do good things.

+ They sustained their tempo this week and didn’t tail off like last week. “I think we did a pretty good job of that.”

+ On the touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson, Fields said that wasn’t a circus catch. That was a routine Garrett Wilson catch.
